Baseball Takes Hectic 13-9 Win Over Maine in Series Finale

LEWISBURG, Pa. – The Bucknell baseball team took the series finale with Maine, 13-9, on Sunday afternoon at Depew Field. Michael Trommer's two-run double in the third inning gave the Bison the lead back for good, and Luke Nascimento brought in what would become the winning run with an RBI single in the next-at bat to help the Bison escape a three-game losing skid.
After pitcher's duels in the first two games of the series, the Bison and Black Bears combined for 18 runs through a hectic first three innings. The Bison took an 11-9 lead into the eighth inning and senior Tyler Dunn smoked a ball off the top of the right field wall to bring in two insurance runs to make it 13-9.
Senior Nick Mulvey quieted the chaotic opening with 3.1 scoreless innings in relief. The left-hander entered in the third inning with the bases filled, allowing two inherited runs to come home before getting two outs to strand a runner at third. Mulvey then made quick work of the Black Bears in the fourth and fifth innings before ending his day with a strikeout in the sixth.
Sophomore Jonathan Adelmann continued his great run on the mound with 2.2 scoreless innings to earn his second save of the season. An inherited runner scored, but Adelmann quickly closed the door to keep the Black Bears at bay. The righthander then struck out the side in the ninth to close out the ballgame.
The chaos started with a five-run first inning as Bucknell sent 10 players up to bat in the frame. Just a day after going hitless through seven innings, the Bison went for 10 hits in the game with four batters picking up two hits.
Senior Billy Kender set the tone with a lead off line drive into right field. The inning got messy, including three walks, a hit-by-pitch, two errors and two fielder's choices. Sophomore Chris Morabito lined a single into centerfield to make it 3-0 before runs came home via a bases-loaded walk by senior Matt Alexander and a fielder's choice by sophomore Billy Fluharty.
Maine and Bucknell went back-and-forth over the next couple innings. The Black Bears cut the lead to 5-3 in the second inning before two more runs for the Bison made it 7-3. Maine took an 8-7 lead after the top of the third, but the Bison had the answer yet again to make it a 10-8 score. While Mulvey closed the door in the middle innings, Kender tacked on another run in the fourth with a sacrifice fly.
Samuel Janik took over for Mulvey in the sixth, getting the final two outs for a scoreless outing by the freshman. Adelmann came out to pitch in the seventh with two runners on. Maine cut the lead to 11-9 before Adelmann used one of his five strikeouts to end the frame. Adelmann got to work in the eighth and ninth, and fanned the final three batters to seal the deal.
Adelmann has yet to allow a run in his name on the season through 11.2 innings over six appearances. Opponents are hitting a measly .125 and totaled just eight base runners. Adelmann has showed his dominance thus far with 18 strikeouts on the season; good for 14.5 strikeouts per nine innings.
Mulvey's outing was his longest of the season and his third outing for the Bison this year without allowing a run. Mulvey and Adelmann combined for nine of Bucknell's 13 strikeouts.
Kender, Michael Trommer, Morabito and Nascimento each had two hits in the game. Trommer drove in three runs for his third game with multiple RBIs and his second with at least as many this season. Morabito and Dunn each drove in two runs in the ballgame while six other Bison picked up an RBI.
Dunn is rocking a five-game hitting streak for the Bison after the series with Maine, getting a knock in every game he's played in. Dunn returned to the lineup after missing seven games, picking up a hit in each game of the series. Dunn broke up a perfect game with a home run in Saturday's contest before his big two-run double in the eighth inning. Â
Bucknell is headed south for Spring Break for six games in six days this upcoming week. The Bison head to Florida to take on tough opponents in Florida Atlantic and Florida International. The Bison start a two-game series with Florida Atlantic on Tuesday evening before finishing the week with a four-game series with Florida International. Tuesday's contest is set to begin at 6:30 p.m. at FAU Baseball Stadium.
