SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Oscar Bain Moreno de Vega, Liam Kilmer, and Brendan McDonald all won three-set singles matches to help carry the Bucknell men's tennis team to a 6-1 Patriot League victory over Colgate on Sunday afternoon at Drumlins Tennis Club. The Bison improved to 12-5 overall and 2-0 in league play, while Colgate dropped to 8-7, 1-3.
Amar Tahirovic and Adam Stavrakas continued their dominance at the top of the lineup, and Bucknell's prowess in the three-setters was the difference. The Bison got out to a good start by sweeping all three doubles matches. Tahirovic and McDonald were the first off with a 6-3 win at No. 1, and Kilmer and Will Robinson clinched the point with a 6-4 verdict at No. 3.
Tahirovic was a 6-2, 6-1 winner over Benito Vlassis at No. 1 singles, and Stavrakas followed with a 6-3, 6-3 win over Aidan Lee on Court 2. Things got interesting when Benjamin Graham got Colgate on the board with a straight-set win at No. 5, and then the three remaining matches all extended to a third set.
At No. 3 singles, Bain defeated Josh Israel 6-3, 4-6, 6-3. Next door on Court 4, Kilmer dropped his first set to Lochlan Seth in a tiebreaker before coming back to control the second and third sets 6-3 and 6-0. After the team result was clinched, McDonald made it a 6-1 final with a 6-4, 4-6, 7-5 win over Jerome Falcon at No. 6.
Stavrakas has now won 17 straight singles matches and is 28-3 on the season. The 28 wins are third-most in a season in Bucknell history. Nick Bybel holds the record with 38 in 2014-15, and Tim Zelikovsky won 29 last season. Tahirovic is 25-3 over the full season, and with 75 career wins he needs only one more win to move into the No. 2 spot on Bucknell's career list.
Bucknell returns home next Saturday to face Loyola at 11 a.m. at the Varsity Tennis Courts.
