Men’s Tennis Sweeps Loyola to Remain Unbeaten in Patriot League Play

LEWISBURG, Pa. – The Bucknell men's tennis team cruised to a 7-0 win over Loyola on Saturday at the Varsity Tennis Courts, dropping only one set along the way. Now 13-4 on the season, the Bison have won four straight matches and improved to 3-0 in Patriot League play heading into next week's home showdown with Navy.
The Bison needed less than half an hour to win all three doubles contests to jump ahead in the match. Amar Tahirovic and Brendan McDonald won 7-1 on Court 1, and the No. 2 tandem of Oscar Bain Moreno de Vega and Adam Stavrakas clinched the point with a 6-3 verdict.
Bucknell dropped only five total games in the top three singles spots. Tahirovic downed Noah Castillo 6-0, 6-1 at No. 1; Stavrakas beat Ryan Gill 6-1, 6-1 at No. 2; and Liam Kilmer bested Blake Edwards 6-0, 6-2 at No. 3
McDonald and Shiv Singh also won in straight sets in the fifth and sixth spots. McDonald beat Harris Zeiders 6-2, 6-3, and Singh defeated Cristian Pemueler 6-1, 6-1.
Loyola's lone set win came from George Cavo in the middle frame at fourth, singles, but Bain won the 10-point tiebreaker 10-6 to finish off the sweep.
Stavrakas won his 18th straight singles match and is now 18-0 in duals. His 29 overall wins, including fall tournaments, tie him with former teammate Tim Zelikovsky for the No. 2 spot on Bucknell's single-season list.
Tahirovic won his 76th career singles match, tying him for second all-time alongside Ira Reibeisen. Nick Bybel holds the program record with 112.
Sunday's scheduled match at Mount St. Mary's has been postponed due to the forecast of inclement weather. Next up is a key Patriot League test against Navy next Friday at home at 3 p.m.
