POST-MATCH INTERVIEWS WITH JASON COHEN AND WILL ROBINSON:
LEWISBURG, Pa. – The Bucknell men's tennis team rolled to a 7-0 sweep of Binghamton in the first home outdoor match of the season on Friday afternoon at the Varsity Tennis Courts. The Bison improved to 11-5 on the season and snapped the Bearcats' three-match winning streak.
This was the first dual match between the Bison and Bearcats since 2016, and Bucknell snapped a nine-match losing streak in the head-to-head series. The Bison won the initial meeting in 2000 before Binghamton captured nine straight.
Oscar Bain Moreno de Vega and Adam Stavrakas set the tone for the day with a 23-minute, 6-0 win at No. 2 doubles. Amar Tahirovic and Brendan McDonald followed with a 6-3 verdict at No. 1 to secure the doubles point.
The Bison then took all six singles matches, dropping only one set in the process. Tahirovic was a 6-0, 6-2 winner over William Morais Binnie at No. 1 singles, and Stavrakas (2), Bain (3), and Will Robinson (5) all won by identical 6-3, 6-1 scorelines. Liam Kilmer was a 7-5, 6-4 winner at No. 4, and McDonald took a 10-point tiebreaker by a 10-7 count after splitting the first two sets with Andrew Fang at No. 6.
Stavrakas has now won 16 straight singles matches and is 27-3 on the season. Tahirovic is 24-3 over the full season and needs only two more wins to move into the No. 2 spot on Bucknell's career list.
Bucknell returns to Patriot League action with a road match against Colgate on Sunday at Drumlins Tennis Club in Syracuse N.Y.
