Bucknell at a Glance
- The Bison look to build on a terrific all-around performance in a 23-7 season-opening win over Merrimack when they visit St. Bonaventure on Saturday. This is the first-ever meeting between Bucknell and the Bonnies, who re-launched their program in 2019.
- Bucknell was terrific in all three phases in Saturday's opener. Offensively, it was the seventh time in team history that the Bison scored at least 23 goals in a game. Only twice have the Bison scored more: 26 goals against Denver in 1992 and 25 goals against VMI in 1983. The last time the Bison scored as many goals was in 2022 when they had two 23-goal performances.
- Patriot League Offensive Player of the Week Connor Davis had a monster game with a career-high eight goals and an assist. He fell one goal short of Will Yorke's team record, set against Marist in 2020. Michael Meyer (4-4-8) and Will Hopkins (3-2-5) also had big days, giving the starting attack trio a total of 15 goals and seven assists. Junior Owen Kovacs, back after missing last season with an injury, scored the first three goals of his career, and Sean Berrigan tallied two goals and an assist.
- Defensively, the Bison limited Merrimack to only one second-half goal and only three after the first quarter. Will Pickering was named Patriot League Defensive Player of the Week after logging four ground balls, three caused turnovers, and his first career assist. The Bison harassed the Warriors into 27 turnovers, held them to 15-for-22 on clears, and won the ground ball battle 43-34. John Young led the way with a career-high eight ground balls, while freshman Jack Tully had five.
- Ben Concepcion was Bucknell's third weekly award winner, as he was named Patriot League Faceoff Specialist of the Week after a sensational performance on Saturday. Seeing the first extensive action of his career, the sophomore went 13-for-17 with four ground balls, including a 9-for-10 showing in the third quarter, when Bucknell outscored Merrimack 9-0.
- Freshmen Anthony Panetti (2A), Luke Brennan (1A) and Crispin Kaye (1A) both notched their first career points.
- Luke Renaud, a transfer from UMass Lowell, made his first Bucknell start in goal and made six saves with six goals against in 45 minutes of action. Freshman Parker Day came on in relief in the fourth quarter and tallied five saves without conceding a goal.
- The Bonnies fielded a Division III men's lacrosse team from 1989-93, and they brought the program back at the Division I level in 2019. After two winless seasons, Randy Mearns' squad went 5-5 in the COVID-shortened 2021 season and then finished 11-4 overall and 5-1 in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference in 2022. St. Bonaventure has struggled over the last two seasons, however, winning once in each campaign.
- The Bonnies, who now play in the Atlantic 10, returned their top seven scorers from a year ago. That includes graduate student Kellen Pulera, who led the team with 22 goals and was drafted by the NLL's Buffalo Bandits.
- St. Bonaventure dropped its season opener at home last Sunday to VMI by an 18-7 count. The Keydets broke open a one-goal game in the second quarter with an 11-1 run that extended all the way into the fourth period.
- Conor Murphy and Kyle Pepper led the Bonnies with two goals each. Lad Harper broke even (11-22) at the faceoff X, and Connor Robinson (8) and Isaac Farmer (4) combined for 12 saves.
- This is the first-ever meeting between the Bison and Bonnies
- Saturday's game is the first of four in a row on the road for Bucknell, all in northern climates. The Bison next head to Dartmouth on Feb. 15, followed by dates with Hobart on Feb. 22 and Patriot League foe Holy Cross on March 1.
