RESULTS
ANNAPOLIS, Md. – Virginia Hastings and Clara Renner went 1-2 in the 200-yard individual medley and five Bison finished in the top nine in the event, boosting the Bucknell women's swimming and diving team into first place after the first of three nights of the ECAC Open Championships at Navy's Lejeune Hall. The Bison also received a gold-silver finish from seniors Reggie Frias and Meghan Catherwood in the 3-meter diving event.
Bucknell amassed 212 points on night one – 77 of them coming in the 200 IM – and the Bison have a 43-point lead over second-place Navy (169). Penn is third with 167 points, and Loyola (134) and Rutgers (107) round out the top five.
The ECAC meet provides an opportunity for those who did not compete at last week's Patriot League Championships to swim in a competitive meet, and for those who did compete last week to improve their times or enter different events.
Renner, who was the Patriot League Rookie of the Meet, and Hastings both had strong PL Championships but neither swam the 200 IM. On Friday, Hastings posted the top time in the morning prelims and then backed it up by claiming the gold medal in 2:01:05, which makes her the third-fastest in school history in the event. Renner owns the No. 2 time with a 2:00.86 at the Bison Invitational earlier this month, and on Friday she was the silver medalist with a 2:01.47.
Kelly Byrne finished fourth, Skye Sunderhauf placed eighth, and Rylie Giles won the B Final for a ninth-place finish, surging the Bison into the team lead.
Bucknell began the night with a fourth-place effort in the 200 freestyle relay. Renner, Ashley Piacentino Giles, and Hastings posted a 1:34.90 to trail only Loyola, Navy, and Penn.
Jennifer Bolden qualified for the A Finals in two events finishing fourth in the 500 free and eighth in the 50 free.
Bolden later came right off the 50 and anchored the 400 medley relay, which finished fifth behind Navy, Rutgers, Penn, and Fairfield. Kendall Luecke, Ava Stallmeyer, and Sunderhauf also swam for the Bison.
Frias, who won bronze on the 3-meter board at the Patriot League Championships last week, has now captured the ECAC title two years in a row. She compiled a score of 280.05 on Friday, and Catherwood was second with a 261.00. Navy's Isabelle Olson was third at 245.10. Frias (290.70) and Catherwood (282.45) rank 2-3 in school history on the 3-meter board.
The ECAC Championships continue on Saturday with morning prelims at 10 a.m. and finals at 6 p.m.
