Â
LEWISBURG, Pa. – The Bucknell women's swimming and diving team bookended the final session of the Patriot League Championships with a pair of silver medals on Saturday night at jam-packed Kinney Natatorium, and the Bison finished solidly in third place while increasing their point total by 227.5 points over last year. Patriot League Rookie of the Meet Clara Renner took home the silver medal in a thrilling finish in the 1,650-yard freestyle, and the 400 free relay capped off the meet with a runner-up finish while just missing the school record.
Â
The freshman Renner took home gold in the 400 individual medley and silver in both the 500 free and 1,650 free in her first collegiate championship meet. The only Patriot League swimmer to beat her in any race all season was Army standout Molly Webber, who won both distance freestyle events on the way to her second straight High Point Scorer of the Meet honor. Â
Â
Saturday's mile final was sensational, as Webber and Renner swapped the lead throughout while running away from the pack. After more than 16-and-a-half minutes, Webber touched the wall first by just .59 seconds. Third-place Sarah Eldridge of Navy was more than 24 seconds behind.
Â
Renner's time of 16:31.54 is second-fastest in school history and is an NCAA B Cut time. Kelly Byrne also scored in the mile with a 16th-place finish.
Â
While Renner's 88 points were fifth-most in the entire women's field and the most among freshmen, sophomore Sara Ketron also wrapped up a sensational week. She had already broken school records in the 50 free, 200 medley relay, and 200 free relay, and on Saturday she was fourth in the 100 free in the third-fastest time in school history (50.69) and later swam the opening leg on the silver-medal-winning 400 free relay.
Â
Ketron, Kyla Kelly, Rylie Giles, and Jennifer Bolden finished a close second to the Webber-anchored Army relay. The Bison quartet posted a time of 3:22.48, which was second-fastest in school history and just .46 off the record set here two years ago.
Â
The 56 points picked up in the final relay gave Bucknell 1,090.5 for the week, quite a jump from last year's total of 863 when the Bison finished fourth behind, Navy, Army, and Boston University. The top two were the same this year, with Navy capturing its 13th straight women's title with 1,514.5 points. Army was second with 1,246, followed by Bucknell, Loyola (809.5), Boston University (727), Lehigh (701), American (554), Colgate (505.5), Lafayette (354), and Holy Cross (346).
Â
Earlier in the evening, Bucknell had four point-scorers in the 200 backstroke and five in the 200 breaststroke. In the 200 back, Talia Bugel finished seventh and Sofia Burns eighth in the A Final. Samantha Benzija placed 15th, and Kendall Luecke earned an evening lane in a swim-off after tying for 24th place in the prelims, and then she moved up to 19th in the C Final. Â
In the 200 breast, Skye Sunderhauf made the A Final and placed sixth. Sydney Jee won the B Final to pick up ninth-place points, and she was followed in that race by Gillian Camperlengo (10th), Hanna Bingley (13th), and Liz Dokina (16th).
Â
Sunderhauf came right back two events later and finished eighth in the 200 butterfly. Sydney Dettman won the B Final to place ninth.
Â
Renner, who also won a bronze medal with the 800 free relay on the opening night of the meet, is Bucknell's fourth Rookie of the Meet since the award's inception in 2005. She joins Emma Levendoski (2013), Maggie Wyngowski (2018), and Sabrina Vumbacco (2020) on the prestigious list.
Â
The Bison will next send a contingent to Annapolis for the ECAC Championships next Friday through Sunday.
