DAVIDSON, N.C. – Michael Trommer had a career-day, driving in four runs on two doubles as the Bucknell baseball team bounced back with an 8-3 win over Davidson in Game 2 of the three-game series on Saturday afternoon at Wilson Field.
Trommer first tied the game 3-3 with an RBI double down the left field line to score sophomore Billy Fluharty in the fifth inning. The second came in the eighth inning, clearing the bases for three runs to break the game open and extend the Bison lead to 8-3. This was the second game of his career with four RBIs.
Davidson got out to an early two-run lead in the second inning before Bucknell plated runs in six straight frames. The Wildcats took a 3-2 lead in the fourth but runs in the fifth and sixth gave the Bison the lead for good.
Sophomore Jake Schultz (1-0) gave the Bison a great start on the mound and earned his first win of the year. He allowed three runs (one unearned) on seven hits over five innings. Schultz fanned five batters and walked nobody in his outing.
The Bison bullpen was fantastic, allowing no runs between two relievers. Sophomore Jonathan Adelmann pitched three scoreless innings in relief to close out the game and earn the save. Adelmann struck out three batters, including two in the ninth. Adelmann has tossed five scoreless innings in two relief appearances to start the season, allowing just three hits and no runs.
Sophomore Dante Pavone pitched a scoreless seventh, getting out of a jam with two runners on base. Altogether, the Bison arms showed great command, issuing just one walk.
Junior Ryan Facinelli had the only other multi-hit game for the Bison with a 2-for-4 day at the plate. Senior Billy Kender was 1-for-3 with an RBI, two runs and two walks. His sacrifice fly in the third got the Bison on the board.
Sophomore Andrew Swenson drove in the only other RBI and Junior Garrison Bullock scored what became the winning run in the sixth inning on a wild pitch. Â
It was a messy game as the Bison scored their eight runs on just seven hits. Davidson picked up nine hits, but the Bison arms held the Wildcats to just three runs. The Bison made three errors and Davidson made two. Bucknell was handed 10 free bases on eight walks and two hit-by-pitches.
The Bison defense, however, was excellent after making three errors in the first four innings. Bucknell turned double plays in the fifth, sixth, and seventh innings after tying and taking the lead, and did not make an error for the remainder of the game. Fluharty made a great play to end the seventh, catching a sinking line drive and firing to first to double off the runner who had strayed too far off the bag.
Noah Jouras, Jamie Daly, Jack Cotrone and Chris Schuchart all had two hits for the Wildcats. Schuchart drove in Daly on both of his hits for two RBIs in the game. Daly opened the scoring in the second inning with an RBI double.
Isaac Fix got the start for Davidson, allowing three runs (two unearned) on four hits. Will Marenghi tossed two scoreless innings in relief with just one baserunner issued on a walk.
Bucknell and Davidson complete the series with the rubber match set for 1 p.m. tomorrow at Wilson Field.
