LEWISBURG, Pa. – Freshman Clara Renner won the 400 -yard individual medley for her first career conference gold medal and the 200 freestyle relay shattered the school record, highlighting a productive Day 3 of the Patriot League Championships for the Bucknell women's swimming and diving team. Boosted by a 121-point bonanza in the 400 IM, the Bison solidified their third-place standing in the 10-team field.
After claiming the silver medal in the 500 free on Thursday, Renner changed the color to gold with a dominant performance in the 400 IM on Friday. After qualifying in fourth in the morning prelims, Renner left enough gas in the tank to go nearly eight seconds faster in the final, outdistancing runner-up Haley Newman of Boston University by a full body length.
Sophomore Virginia Hastings joined Renner on the podium with a bronze medal finish. Hastings earned her first career Patriot League medal after finishing fourth in this event last year. Renner (4:16.85) and Hastings (4:18.65) now have the second- and third-fastest times in school history in the 400 IM. Renner became the first Bison to win the event since Maggie Wyngowski in 2020. Bucknell's only other PL champs in the 400 IM are Laura Goeller (2005), Daniela Faas (2004), Molly Lowe (1999), and Kate Wood (1997).
Orange & blue caps made up half the field in the B Final, where Kelly Byrne and Kendall Luecke finished 1-2 to score ninth and 10th-place points for the Bison. Byrne, also a sophomore jumped into the No. 10 spot in team history with a time of 4:22.99. Skye Sunderhauf finished 13th and Kyla Kelly 16th.
Bucknell had multiple swimmers in the A Finals in both the 200 free and 100 breaststroke. In the 200 free, Jennifer Bolden finished fifth and Sara Ketron seventh. In the B Final, Rylie Giles (10th) and Sydney Dettmann (15th) added to the point total. Bolden's time of 1:49.73 in the morning prelims was a personal best, and she remained in the No. 8 spot in team history.
In the 100 breast, Hanna Bingley, Sydney Jee, and Liz Dokina all made the A Final and finished 6-7-8. Gillian Camperlengo swam in the B Final and placed 15th. Jee's 1:03.38 in the prelims was a PR, and she remained eighth all-time at Bucknell.
Freshman Sofia Burns won the B Final in the 100 backstroke, with her time of 55.88 moving her into eighth in school history. Talia Bugel (19th) and Samantha Benzija (22nd) also scored. Benzija was also 18th in the 100 butterfly to start the evening.
Two divers scored for the Bison in the 1-meter event. Reggie Frias made the A Final and finished eighth, while Natalie Penman placed 18th.
The evening session finished with a bang, as Ketron, Kelly, Hastings, and Bolden broke the school record with a fourth-place time of 1:32.70. The Bison quartet was only .39 behind Navy for the bronze medal. Hastings and Kelly also swam on the previous record-setting relay. They joined Kayla Lichtner and Esme Hunter for a 1:32.93 at last year's Patriot League meet at Navy.
Ketron opened with a 23.04 50, which matched her time in the open 50 from a day earlier. Ketron broke the school record with a 23.00 in the prelims on Thursday morning, and she has also helped break Bucknell marks in the 200 medley relay and 200 free relay.
Navy remained in first place with 1,092.5 points, with Army second at 902.5. Bucknell is solidly in third with 736 points, followed by Loyola (569), Boston University (516), Lehigh (470), American (413), Colgate (345.5), Lafayette (275), and Holy Cross (230.5).
