LEWISBURG, Pa. – Sophomore Sara Ketron broke the oldest remaining Bucknell record on the board, and freshman Clara Renner earned the silver medal in the 500-yard freestyle, highlighting Day 2 of the Patriot League Championships for the Bison women's swimming and diving team.
Bucknell remained in third place with 349 points, 22 more than fourth-place Loyola. Navy moved into first place with 523 points, followed by Army with 451. Lehigh is in fifth with 263 points, followed by Boston University (255), American (219), Colgate (213), Holy Cross (155), and Lafayette (153).
Molly Goebel's school-record time of 23.20 in the 50 free at the 2009 Patriot League Championships was the longest-standing mark in the Bucknell record book, but Ketron bettered it Thursday morning's prelims with a time of 23.00.
Ketron qualified in third place, and she came back in the evening to finish fourth in 23.04. That left her just .02 off the podium and .36 off the winning time of American's Mimi Watts, who won the 50 free for the third year in a row. Bucknell's Jennifer Bolden scored with a 19th-place finish.
Renner also ran into a three-time champion in her first collegiate final. She finished second in the 500 free in 4:48.48, trailing only reigning Patriot League Swimmer of the Meet Molly Webber, who claimed the event for the third straight year. Renner's time was more than three seconds faster than her prelim mark, and she set a new personal best while remaining in the No. 3 spot on Bucknell's all-time list. Kelly Byrne (13th) and Rylie Giles (16th) also scored in the 500 free for the Bison.
In the 200 individual medley, junior Kyla Kelly made the A Final and finished in sixth place in 2:02.89. That was also a PR, and she remained in the No. 9 position in school history. Kendall Luecke made the B Final and finished 13th, three spots better than her prelim seed.
Bucknell finished the night with a sixth-place finish in the 400 medley relay. The young quartet of freshmen Sofia Burns and Sydney Jee followed by sophomores Samantha Benzija and Ketron posted a time of 3:44.76. That is the eighth-fastest time in school history.
The meet resumes on Friday with prelims at 10 a.m. and finals at 6 p.m. Medals will be handed out in the 100 butterfly, 400 IM, 200 free, 100 breaststroke, 100 backstroke, 1-meter diving, and 200 free relay.
