LEWISBURG, Pa.- Sophomore outfielder Shea Malone made a triumphant return to the diamond at the Texan Classic and received Patriot League Player of the Week as announced Monday afternoon by the league office. Malone became the first Bison to win opening weekend Player of the Week honors since Jacee Almond in 2014.
"I'm really proud of Shea for getting this award week one," said Bucknell head coach Sarah Caffrey. "She has been outstanding for us all fall and early spring and I'm just so happy that she had such a great weekend at the plate. I think when you face good pitching it really helps to have the success early to continue to breed confidence as we move through our season. She is a really bright spot for us in our lineup and I can't wait to see what she continues to do for our team."
Malone batted a robust .600 on 9 of 15 at-bats in the Bison's five games at the Texan Classic. The sophomore recorded a hit in every contest, including three multi-hit games. She went 2 for 3 with two RBIs in Bucknell's 12-1 run-rule win over Arkansas Pine Bluff. Against Marist, she delivered a double off the wall that gave Bucknell a 2-1 lead. Malone cleanly fielded eight putouts while patrolling the outfield. Her .600 batting average currently leads the circuit along with her nine hits.
The Bison softball team returns to action on Feb. 22-23 when Bucknell battles Delaware State in a three-game series.
