LEWISBURG, Pa. – The Bucknell women's swimming and diving squad will be carrying some momentum into the Patriot League Championships in three weeks. After finishing off a strong 6-2 dual-meet campaign, the Bison turned in an outstanding performance with nine event wins and six new top-10 marks at Saturday's non-scored Bison Invitational at Kinney Natatorium.
Competing against Patriot League rivals Navy, American, Lafayette, and Lehigh, along with Shippensburg, freshman Clara Renner won both of her events as part of 1-2 Bison finishes, and senior Reggie Frias won both diving events and entered her name in the Bucknell top-10 on the 1-meter board for the first time.
Bucknell started the day with a bang, winning the first two events with top-10 times. Virginia Hastings, Sara Ketron, Kyla Kelly, and Jennifer Bolden captured the 200-yard freestyle relay in a time of 1:33.15. That was more than a full second ahead of Navy and is now the fourth-fastest time in school history. Hastings and Kelly helped set the Bucknell record with a 1:32.93 at last year's Patriot League Championships in Annapolis.
Renner followed with a near-record swim on the way to victory in the 200 individual medley. Her 2:00.86 is second-best all-time and just a shade off Maggie Wyngowski's five-year-old standard of 2:00.15. Ketron came right back off the relay and finished second to Renner in the 200 IM.
Later in the day, Renner and Kelly went 1-2 in the 200 free, with Ketron fourth. Renner has yet to be beaten by any Patriot League swimmer this season, and she now has 21 wins on the campaign.
Frias had a huge day on the boards. She entered the meet with the second-best score in team history on the 3-meter board but had yet to break into the top-10 in the 1-meter competition. That changed on Saturday, when she posted a winning aggregate of 261.40 to move into the No. 6 spot. Frias later won the 3-meter with a score of 272.00.
Bucknell's other wins came from Rylie Giles in the 200 butterfly, Hastings in the 400 IM, Kelly Byrne in the 200 backstroke, and Liz Dokina in the 200 breaststroke.
Dokina, who went 1-2 with Ava Stallmeyer, notched the ninth-best mark in school history in the 200 breast (2:18.37). That's just a tenth of a second behind Stallmeyer's PR, which has her in the No. 8 spot.
Hastings won the 400 IM with a personal-best time of 4:21.60, which moves her into eighth all-time. Byrne, who was also Bucknell's top finisher in the 100 breast with a fourth-place finish, led a 1-3-5 Bison effort in the 200 back along with Sydney Dettmann and Samantha Benzija.
Kelly also placed second in the 100 back in 56.49, which slides her into the No. 10 spot in Bucknell history.
Other notable performances came from Skye Sunderhauf, who finished behind only two Navy competitors in the 500 free, and a fourth-place effort from Ashley Piacentino in the 100 free.
The Bison will now shift their training to the 2025 Patriot League Championships, which will be held at Kinney Natatorium on Feb. 19-22.
