Bucknell at a Glance:
• Bucknell's schedule finally relaxes after opening the season versus four consecutive top 25 foes. The Bison were competitive in every dual, losing by single-digits. The Orange & Blue's strength of schedule sits at sixth nationally.Â
• EIWA play begins for the Bison at the Bucknell Quad with duals versus Morgan State and Hofstra.Â
• Five Bison wrestlers are ranked by Intermat with Dillon Bechtold registering the highest at #10. Bechtold missed the season's first three competitions and made his 2025-26 debut versus No. 18 Oklahoma and upset Pitt's then No. 5 Mac Stout with a sudden victory takedown to win Bison of the Week.Â
• Dylan Chappell entered 2025-26 with 88 career wins and the fifth-year senior added three to his ledger at the Navy Classic and picked up a victory in the Wisconsin dual. He looks to become the next Bison grappler to reach the 100-win milestone. Kurt Phipps was the last Bucknell wrestler to achieve the distinction, earning number 100 against Anthony Noto (Lock Haven) on Jan. 30, 2025.Â
• Bucknell posted its third straight top 25 recruiting class, providing an even greater pool of talent for the program. The depth has been on display with the Bison taking every ranked foe to the bitter end.Â
• Head coach Dan Wirnsberger is in his 20th season with the Bison and his 21th year leading the program since its revival in 2005.Â
A Look Back at the Pitt Dual
• Bucknell nearly pulled off the 12-0 comeback before falling 18-13 to No. 20 Pitt on Dec. 7. The dual boiled down to the heavyweight bout between Bucknell freshman Lucas Lawler and Pitt's 12th-ranked Dayton Pitzer. Lawler grappled but dropped the 1-0 decision, allowing the Panthers to escape the upset-minded Bison.Â
• Pitt dominated the early proceedings winning the first four bouts via decisions to build a 12-0 advantage.Â
• Bucknell started its comeback with a Cade Wirnsberger (157) victory. The junior won a narrow 5-4 decision over Vince Bouzakis.Â
• Noah Mulvaney's (165) major decision victory over Jared Keslar cut the deficit to 12-7.Â
• Myles Takats (174) won Bucknell's third straight bout with an 5-3 upset win over No. 14 Luca Augustine.Â
• The Bison's momentum was blunted by Tyler Bienus' (184) narrow 8-7 loss to Chase Kranitz.Â
• Dillon Bechtold (197) pulled off the biggest upset of the dual with a 4-1 sudden victory takedown over No. 5 Mac Stout, the reigning ACC Champion and All-American. Bechtold's win created a 15-13 situation and made the heavyweight bout a winner-take-all situation.Â
Scouting the Opposition/Series History
• Morgan State is 0-6 on the season and has lost every bout by an average of 28 points.Â
• The Bears have two ranked wrestlers in their lineup: No. 33 Javaan Yabrough (133) and No. 31 Eugene Harney (149).Â
• Bucknell is 3-0 all-time against Morgan State.Â
• Virginia sits at 5-2 on the season and has played an interesting brew of opponents. The Cavaliers narrowly lost 21-17 to No. 8 Lehigh but were routed 40-3 by No. 11 Michigan. They routed Bridgeport 56-0 and East Stroudsburg 49-0 in their most recent duals on Dec. 7. Â
• The Wahoo boasts three ranked wrestlers: No. 23 Keyveon Roller (125), No. 24 Colton Washleski (157), and No. 19 Nick Hamilton (174).Â
• The Bison are 3-8 all-time against Virginia.
• Hofstra has a 1-5 record with its sole win over fellow EIWA member Sacred Heart (21-15). The Pride, like the Bison, faced Wisconsin. Unlike Bucknell, who wrestled the Badgers down to the final bout, Hofstra fell 41-0.Â
• The Pride do not have any wrestlers ranked by Intermat.Â
• The Orange & Blue lead the all-time against Hofstra, 17-9.Â
A Look Ahead
• Bucknell returns to the competitive and prestigious Midlands Championships on Dec. 29-30.Â
