
Bucknell Falls to UAlbany in Heartbreaking OT Loss

LEWISBURG, Pa. — Bucknell women's basketball (3-5) fell in a heartbreaking fashion to UAlbany (6-2) 65-62 in overtime after the Great Danes hit back-to-back three-pointers to take the lead with seconds left in the overtime period and ultimately take the road victory.
A fourth quarter clash with seven lead changes resulted in a 53-53 tie at the end of regulation thanks to Tuana Coskun hitting a shot with just 0.4 seconds left in the fourth quarter to force overtime. Bucknell held the lead throughout the first half, but the Great Danes tied the game at 51 with just under two minutes left to play and Amaya Stewart hit a go-ahead shot with 17.1 seconds left. Coskun tied it up with less than a second to go in order to force overtime.
Overtime was a flurry of three's that featured six, while regulation only saw seven total three-pointers in 40 minutes. Reese Zemitis opened overtime with a three-pointer that was immediately answered with a Great Dane three. Elana Weisman then hit a three-pointer that UAlbany answered with two. Tuana Coskun joined the trey party with one of her own to give Bucknell a four-point lead, but it wouldn't be enough as Bella Stuart and Amaya Stewart would make back-to-back three-pointers before UAlbany closed out the game with a free-throw.
Bucknell shot 43.1% from the field, 31.8% from three and 78.6% from the free-throw line in the loss. Both teams struggled with turnovers throughout the game with Bucknell having 17 and UAlbany recording 16. The Great Danes shot 41.8% from the field, 33.3% from three and 65.0% from the line to edge out the Bison in overtime.
Three Bison put up double-digit points in the overtime loss. Zemitis and Coskun each recorded 18 to lead the charge. Zemitis shot 7-of-14 from the field and went 3-for-9 from three, including one of the overtime lead changing shots. Coskun went 6-of-13 from the field and 2-of-6 from three, including Bucknell's final basket of overtime. Coskun also went 4-for-4 from the free-throw line in regulation. Weisman recorded 11 points on a 4-of-9 shooting performance from the field and a 2-of-2 free-throw performance. She also went 1-of-3 from three which included a lead-changing basket in overtime.Zemitis led the Bison in rebounds with five, Weisman led the team in assists and blocks with four apiece.
The Great Danes were led by Amaya Stewart, who put up 20 points on an 8-for-13 shooting performance from the field and a 4-of-4 performance from the free-throw line. Gabriela Falcao led UAlbany in rebounds with nine.
UAlbany opened the game with a layup and Bucknell answered with an 11-0 run that would force the Great Danes to call a timeout with 3:41 left in the first quarter. Zemitis had five of the 11 Bison points and Richards hit the jumper that would force the timeout. Out of the break, Stewart hit a shot to break the Bison's scoring streak, but it wouldn't last long as Kreuzer hit a three to swing the momentum back in the Bisons favor as it was followed up by a Casey three-point play off of a free-throw. The quarter ended with UAlbany's Palomo hitting a toss-up three-pointer at the buzzer to make it a 17-8 game after ten.
The Great Danes started the second quarter off with another three, but Zemitis responded with a three of her own to cancel it out. Bucknell then fouled UAlbany twice in a row after turning over the ball and the Great Danes went 3-of-4 from the free-throw line. Bucknell narrowly outscored UAlbany 6-5 in the final five minutes of the half to hold its lead with a 26-19 halftime score. Eight of the 11 Great Dane second quarter points came from the free-throw line as the Bison limited UAlbany's field goal percentage to 20% in the first half.
UAlbany opened the second half with a 6-0 run to make it a one-point game before Zemitis made a driving layup to give Bucknell a three-point cushion. The Great Danes then went on a 4-0 run to take the lead 29-28 with 4:35 left in the third. The Bison then hit back-to-back layups while stopping the Great Danes to regain the lead. Hill made a layup to bring it back to a one-point game, but Zemitis would immediately hit a three-pointer to extend the Bison's lead once again. Falcao got a lay for the Great Danes and Coskun answered for Bucknell with five unanswered points to end the quarter up 45-30.
Coskun continued her unanswered scoring streak with a basket to open the fourth quarter, before the Great Danes answered with an 8-0 run to take the lead and spark a grouping of seven lead changes in the fourth quarter. Coskun fought for a difficult basket to tie the game at 53 with 0.4 seconds in the game to force overtime.
Reese Zemitis opened overtime with a huge three-pointer at the tailend of the shot clock to take a 56-53 lead. UAlbany hit a three a couple minutes later and then Weisman joined the trey party with one of her own to put Bucknell in the lead once again. UAlbany then hit back-to-back three-pointers to take a 64-62 lead and would carry that out to get the road win.
Bucknell now hits the road for a packed weekend of travel as it heads to Vermont for a Friday night game at 6 p.m. before traveling to New Hampshire to take on Dartmouth on Sunday, Dec. 7 at 2 p.m.
