SAN DIEGO, Calif. – Brendan McDonald and Amar Tahirovic fell one win shy of an automatic berth in the NCAA Championships, as the Bucknell duo was beaten in the third-place match of the ITA Conference Masters Championships on Sunday at the Barnes Tennis Center.
Â
McDonald and Tahirovic fell 6-2, 6-2 to fifth-seeded Petro Kuzmenok and Santiago Navarro of Rice to finish fourth in the 32-team doubles flight. The top three tandems receive NCAA bids. Earlier in the weekend, the Bison duo defeated teams from Boise State, UC Santa Barbara, and Presbyterian to reach the semifinals. They lost to the No. 2 seed from Middle Tennessee State in the semis on Saturday.
Â
Despite the tough finish, McDonald received the ITA Sportsmanship Award on Sunday.
Â
Bucknell also finished up play at the Navy Invitational. Will Robinson and Tyler Bush defeated James Madison's Francisco Sinopoli and Esteve Agusti 6-4 as part of a 2-1 weekend. The Bison contingent went 9-6 in singles and 3-3 in doubles over three days.
Â
The fall tournament season is now complete. The spring campaign gets underway in January, with the full schedule to be announced soon. Â
