DRAWS & RESULTS
Â
SAN DIEGO, Calif. – Bucknell senior Amar Tahirovic played seven sets of tennis on a jam-packed opening day at the ITA Conference Masters Championships at the Barnes Tennis Center. He won five of those seven sets, good for a 1-1 day in singles and a first-round win in doubles with fellow senior Brendan McDonald.
Â
Tahirovic began the day with a 6-3, 7-6 (7-4) win over DePaul's Alejandro Ganini, who earned Big East Player of the Year honors while playing for Creighton last season. Shortly after that victory, Tahirovic took on fourth-seeded and 15th-ranked Martin Borisiouk of North Carolina State and dropped a hard-fought three-setter. Borisiouk, who was an NCAA singles qualifier last year after winning the ITA Carolina Regional, prevailed 6-2, 6-7 (6-8), 6-2.
Â
Tahirovic came back in the evening to team up with McDonald for a 6-3, 6-4 doubles win over Boise State's Avery Tallakson and Carson Baker. Tallakson was also playing his third match of the day, as he won twice in singles to move into the quarterfinals. He was the Mountain West Tournament MVP last spring after leading New Mexico to the conference title.
Â
The Bison tandem will play sixth-seeded Conrad Brown and Miguel Avendano Cadena of UC Santa Barbara on Friday evening. The UCSB duo had a first-round bye.
Â
Also getting underway on Friday is the Navy Invitational, where six Bucknell players will be in action over the next three days. Â
