LEWISBURG, Pa.- Bucknell Volleyball (7-8, 4-2 Patriot League) ended its two-game losing streak with a dominant four-set win (25-20, 25-20, 15-25, 25-22) over Loyola (Md.) (4-11, 2-4 Patriot League) on Saturday afternoon. The win moved the Bison into a tie for third place with Army in the conference standings.Â
The Bison used a diverse offensive attack to power past the Greyhounds. Three different players tallied double-digit kills with freshman Klea Tarja leading the way with 13 kills in her first career start. She also served three aces. Kaitlyn Taylor provided 12 kills and Sidney Shaffer added 11. Riley Tucker supplied eight kills on a sparkling .571 hitting percentage. She posted 2.5 blocks as a potent force in the middle.Â
The first set sat at 7-7 before the Bison ripped off an 8-2 rally. Loyola fought back with a 4-0 stretch and eventually clawed within 22-20. Bucknell calmly used a 3-0 run punctuated by Tucker reaching over the net for a kill, clinching the 25-20 set win.Â
The second stanza was an evenly-fought set with both teams trading points like baseball cards. The score was 14-14 when the Bison started collecting two points to Loyola's one for the 24-19 lead. Tucker, at one point, scored three of Bucknell's four points. A Shaffer service error kept the Greyhounds some false hope, as Taylor finished the set with a powerful kill.Â
Loyola fought desperately to avoid the sweep and came out firing in the third set. Bucknell scratched back to a 14-12 deficit. An 8-0 run by Loyola ended any Bison dreams of a sweep. Two Bucknell service errors sealed the 25-15 set win for Loyola.Â
Bucknell was determined to avoid a fifth set and broke out to an 8-1 lead in the fourth volley. The Bison continued to lead by a touchdown for most of the set before the Greyhounds raced to within 20-17. The Bison regained some momentum with a 23-18 lead before Loyola scored the next four out of five points. The set and match ended when Loyola selfdestructed with a service error for the Orange & Blue win.Â
The Bison's schedule takes a patriotic turn next weekend with Army (Oct. 10) and Navy (Oct. 11).Â
