RICHMOND, Va. -- Bucknell's top three singles players all won their matches against players from James Madison on the opening day of Richmond's River City Open on Friday. Amar Tahirovic and Adam Stavrakas both cruised to straight-set wins, while Liam Kilmer came from behind to pull out a three-setter.
The Bison and Dukes were matched up in singles on day one of the round-robin event. Tahirovic, No. 43 in the ITA singles rankings, downed Ryan Morgan 6-0, 6-2, and Stavrakas also conceded only two games in a 6-1, 6-1 rout of Aurelien Schmitt. Kilmer dropped the first set 6-4 to Ty Wunderlich, but he came back to take the next two 6-1 and 6-3.
JMU took the other five head-to-head single matches. Will Robinson and Nelson Alapi both won second sets but couldn't finish off the comebacks. Oscar Bain Moreno de Vega dropped his second set in a tight 7-5 tiebreaker to Francisco Sinopoli.
Bucknell also played doubles on Friday and dropped three matches to Richmond and one to James Madison.
This is the season debut for five Bison, while Tahirovic and Stavrakas are back in action after playing in the ITA All-American Championships in Tulsa last week.
Play resumes on Saturday, with Bucknell taking on players from Richmond and William & Mary in singles, and Hampton, William & Mary, and James Madison in doubles.
