BETHLEHEM, Pa. – It was a good start for the Bucknell men's tennis team on the opening day of the Patriot League qualifier for the ITA Conference Masters Championships, as the Bison won all three of their matches on Friday at Lehigh. No. 43 Amar Tahirovic and Adam Stavrakas both won their singles matches in straight sets, and Tahirovic and Brendan McDonald rolled in doubles.
Tahirovic, the defending champion and No. 1 seed in singles, had a first-round bye and then cruised to a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Colgate's Wittman Bulger, who had to win a three-set match earlier in the day. Tahirovic will next play Navy's Jeffrey Etterbeek, who was a 6-4, 6-3 winner over Army's Matias Feoli in the Round of 16.
In the bottom half of the draw, third-seeded Stavrakas downed Holy Cross' Matthew Carlson 6-2, 6-4. Stavrakas will play Army's Jimin Jung in the quarterfinals on Saturday.
On the doubles side, Tahirovic and McDonald are also the defending champs and this year's No. 1 seed. After receiving a bye into the quarterfinals, they downed Loyola's Nick Lawliss and Ryan Gill by an 8-3 count. The Bison tandem will now play Lehigh's Kosei Ogata and Sean Jaeger in the semis.
This weekend's singles and doubles champions will go on to represent the Patriot League at the ITA Conference Masters in San Diego next month. That tournament serves as a qualifier for the NCAA Championships later in the fall.
