PRINCETON, N.J. – Bucknell senior Liam Kilmer won both of his singles matches on Thursday in the qualifying round of the ITA Northeast Regional Championships at Princeton, and he will now join teammates Amar Tahirovic and Adam Stavrakas in the Main Draw, which gets underway on Friday.
Â
After dropping his opening set 6-3 to Penn State's Kyle Chesman, Kilmer played beautiful tennis for the rest of the day. A dominant serve propelled him to 6-1 and 6-2 verdicts in the final two sets, and then he came right back and posted a 6-4, 7-5 win over Saint Joseph's Santiago Valle in the second round. Kilmer broke Valle's serve at 5-all in the second set, then served it out at love with an ace on match point.
Â
Senior Brendan McDonald also won his opening-round match. He defeated Mercyhurst's Lukas Cabue 6-1, 7-6 (7-3), but then he dropped a hard-fought 6-4, 6-4 decision to Penn State's Reiya Hattori.
Â
Senior Oscar Bain Moreno de Vega lost his opening set to Temple's Pramav Nemani and then had to retire due to injury in the second set. Junior Will Robinson fell to opponents from Penn State and NJIT on Thursday.
Â
Doubles action starts up on Friday morning, with all six Bison slated to compete. Tahirovic and McDonald will take on Tom Sorin and Severin Risan from NJIT; Kilmer and Robinson will face Tobey Lock and Euan Mackenzie of Delaware; and Savrakas and Bain are matched up against Kush Anand and William Monahan of Villanova.
