Women's Tennis Falls to Villanova in Spring Opener

South Williamsport, Pa. – The Bucknell women's tennis team fell in its spring opener to Villanova 4-1 on Saturday evening at the Central PA Tennis Center. Senior Whitney King and junior Abby Platt picked up a win in the No. 1 doubles spot to improve their record as a duo to 43-11, but Villanova came out on top in close matches across the board.
Platt earned the only singles win for the Bison. Platt took the first set 6-0, but tied 1-1 in the second, her opponent retired due to injury to give the Bison a point.
Villanova's Jenna Stevens and Maddie Hills took the first doubles match with a 6-4 win in the No. 3 spot. Platt and King came away with a 6-4 victory at No. 1, but a 6-4 win by Maggie Gehrig and Olivia Corcoran clinched the doubles point for the Wildcats at No. 2.
Platt's win quickly gave the Bison a point, but the Wildcats came away with the next three matches. Corcoran got her second win of the day at No. 3, defeating Anna Lajos 6-2 and 6-4.
At No. 4, Stevens defeated sophomore Tori Allen, taking the first set 6-3 and winning 7-3 in a tiebreaker in the second set. Sophia Edwards defeated King in a close contest at No. 1. Edwards took the first set 7-5 before taking a 7-4 tiebreaker in the second set to clinch the match for Villanova.
Freshmen Natalie Devraj and Riley Jennings both had unfinished matches. At No. 5, Devraj leveled her match with a 6-3 win in the second set. Devraj led the third set 5-4 when Villanova clinched the match. Jennings took her first set 6-2, but fell in a 7-3 tiebreaker in the second set. Jennings trailed 3-1 in the third set as the match ended.
The Bison are back at it tomorrow, traveling to face Delaware for a 1:30 p.m. match.
