FAIRFAX, Va. – James Eliuda scored in the 15th minute on George Mason's only shot on frame all night, and the Patriots held on for a 1-0 win over visiting Bucknell on Tuesday night at George Mason Stadium. Both teams came in with identical 2-0 records, and it was George Mason remaining unbeaten even though the Bison had the better of the possession.
Bucknell's press had George Mason pinned back early in the match, but the Patriots cashed in on their only high-quality chance of the half. Quentin Clain served a low cross from the left flank, and Eliuda tucked a redirect inside the left post for his second goal of the season.
The Bison felt aggrieved not to have equalized in the 64th minute. David Krumov's free kick took a big bounce untouched in the box and was headed home by Cade Whitmire, who had come from behind the wall on the service, but the celebration was short-lived the offside flag went up.
Moments later George Mason nearly had a second when Asparuh Slavov found space in the center of the area, but Aidan Lawlor came up with a key block, and then Slavov's follow-up attempt went wide.
Jackson Sullivan just missed the far post from the right side of the area in the 79th minute, and Winston Oziri's sliding attempt also skipped wide. The Bison sent a number of services into the box in the final minutes but could not get one to go.
"I thought for the most part it was a super performance, but we have to finish our chances," said head coach Dave Brandt. "George Mason is a very good team and we gave them all they could handle. I told the team that I was proud of our performance in the second game of last season against West Virginia, but it didn't lead to anything. There is so much potential in this group that it would be a crime if that happened. We have everything in front of us."
Brandt was particularly impressed with his back three of Lawlor, Sullivan, and Ben Sheffield, who helped limit George Mason to eight total shots and only one on target. The Eliuda goal was the first allowed by the Bison this season, while the high-powered Patriots now have seven goals in three games.
Whitmire made his first Bucknell start and nearly drew a penalty in the first three minutes of the match, in addition to his goal that was taken away.
The Bison led 12-8 on the shot chart and had a 5-3 edge in corner kicks.
Bucknell returns home on Saturday night to face Saint Francis at 7 p.m. The program will be honoring its outstanding 1970s era teams, including the 50th anniversary of the 1974 squad that went 12-1-2, won the East Coast Conference championship, and defeated Penn State in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.
