Women’s Soccer Falls 1-0 to Army West Point

LEWISBURG, Pa. – Bella Conti's strike three minutes into the second half was the only goal in Army West Point's 1-0 victory over Bucknell in Patriot League women's soccer action on Saturday afternoon at Emmitt Field at Holmes Stadium. It was a good battle between the teams who faced off in each of the last two Patriot League Tournament finals, both won by the Bison in penalty-kick shootouts, but the Black Knights found the only goal and matched Bucknell with 2-1 records after three rounds of league play.
Dylan Zednik got the start in goal for Bucknell after Jess Benattar picked up an injury late in Wednesday's win at American. Zednik had a strong day with four saves, including a highlight-reel tip into the crossbar on Brigid Duffy's shot in the first half.
Not many goalkeepers would have saved Conti's 49th-minute strike. Off a throw-in from Jordan Follenweider, Conti took the ball centrally and ripped a 20-yard shot off the bar and down in the top right corner.
Bucknell's best stretch came in the final 15 minutes of the first half. Teresa Deda, coming off a three-assist performance in the win over American, struck a shot just wide of the left post and then hit one from the top of the 18 that required a diving save from Sage Strohman.
Nine of Bucknell's 11 shots came in the first half, as Army defended well after taking the lead. In the 79th minute, Riley Hayes hammered a shot from long distance that just missed over the bar. That would be Bucknell's best chance in the latter stages.
Army outshot the Bison 12-11 and limited them to one corner kick. Strohman tallied five saves for Army, which bounced back from a 1-0 home loss to Holy Cross on Wednesday.
The Crusaders are now tied for first place alongside Boston University with seven points from a 2-0-1 record, and they will pay a visit to Emmitt Field for Senior Day next Saturday.
