LEWISBURG, Pa.- Evelyn Bliss captured bronze in the javelin throw at the U20 World Championships Friday and today brings home Bucknell's weekly Bison of the Week honor as announced by the Athletic Department.
"Bison of the Week is the cherry on top after earning bronze at the U20 World Championships," said Bucknell throws coach Ryan Protzman. "It is a great welcome back home. Evie is a great teammate and person. She loves her teammates, and they all respect her as a person before the athlete. She has been a joy to coach and has made me a better coach. Evie laid the foundation for her college career, and the ceiling is nowhere in sight."
Bliss capped her sensational rookie year by representing the United States in Lima, Peru at the U20 World Championships. The rising sophomore finished seventh in the opening round, earning passage to the finals.
In the finals, she hit her bronze-winning throw of 177-2 feet (54.01 meters). She overcame difficult windy weather and faulty form to uncork the medal-clinching toss. Bliss started the competition with a solid throw but wasn't satisfied and ground out her best performance.
Bliss spent the summer in domestic and foreign competitions. After winning the javelin throw at the Patriot League Outdoor Championships, she placed fifth at the NCAA East Regionals. She progressed to the NCAA National Championships, finishing 13th and winning Second Team All-America honors.
With her collegiate campaign concluded Bliss turned to other competitions. She won the U20 National Championships, earning entry to the competition in Peru. Bliss competed in the Olympic Trials and placed sixth on her career-best throw of 183-2. That mark ranks second in Bucknell history behind Bison legend and three-time All-American Maura Fiamoncini's 185-4 distance. Her year of competition was completed with the U20 World Championships.
Bliss will rest and refuel for the upcoming outdoor track & field season, where she will defend her Patriot League crown and attempt to break Fiamoncini's record.
