Bucknell at a Glance
- After opening up Patriot League play on a strong note with a 2-1 home win over Navy on Saturday, the Bison step away from the conference slate and head to Cornell on Tuesday night to take on the unbeaten Big Red.
- Bucknell is now 3-2 overall this season, with the wins coming against Robert Morris, Mount St. Mary's and Navy.
- Cohen Weaver and Cade Whitmire both registered a goal and an assist in the 2-1 win over the Midshipmen on Saturday. Weaver (Penn State) and Whitmire (Tulsa) are both transfers in their first year at Bucknell, and both recorded their first collegiate points in the victory.
- Weaver was recognized as the Patriot League Midfielder of the Week on Monday. He set up Whitmire's opening goal in the 12th minute, and then eight minutes later he scored himself on a beautiful redirect to the top corner off a low cross in from Jack Lucas.
- Lucas now has a Patriot League-high three assists and five points on the season. The Bison have six goals, coming from six different players. Lucas, Weaver, Whitmire, Cade McGrath, Drew Roskos, and Ben Sheffield have all count the back of the net. David Krumov has a pair of assists.
- Goalkeeper Freddie Lapworth has 14 saves with five goals against for a .737 save percentage and a 1.00 goals-against average.
- As a team, Bucknell is tied with American in GAA with 1.00 per game.
- All five matches had a winner on the opening day of Patriot League play. Bucknell sits at the top of the table along with American, Boston University, Colgate, and Holy Cross.
- Dave Brandt is Bucknell's 14th full-time head coach and just the third dating back to 1967. Brandt, who is now in his third season at Bucknell, brought with him a remarkable career record of 354-86-40 in stints at Messiah, Navy, and Hope. Brandt won six Division III national championships at Messiah and led Navy to the 2013 Patriot League title and an NCAA Tournament first-round win.       Â
- The Red Flash are off to a 2-0-2 start after finishing 8-4-3 last season.
- Cornell has scored multiple goals in every game and has wins over Penn State (3-2) and Marist (3-0) and draws with No. 14 Georgetown (2-2) and UAlbany (2-2).
- Half of Cornell's 10 goals have come from sophomore Alex Harris, who has scored in every game thus far. Harris had a brace against Penn State, both coming in the second half as the Big Red flipped a 2-1 deficit into a 3-2 win, and one goal in the other three matches. His 81st-minute goal was the equalizer in the draw with Georgetown, and his 70th-minute strike tied the game at UAlbany. Harris set a Cornell freshman record with 12 goals on the way to Ivy League Rookie of the Year honors in 2023.
- Connor Miller, Giorgos Diakos, Aidan Martin, Andrew Johnson, and Alioune Ka have one goal apiece.
- Ryan Friedberg has played every minute in goal and has eight saves with six goals against.Â
- Cornell returned 84 percent of its scoring from last year and brought back four All-Ivy League honorees. A fifth All-Ivy selection, Wilson Eisner, elected to forego his senior season after signing with the San Jose Earthquakes of MLS.Â
- Bucknell is 1-8 all-time against Cornell in a series that dates back to 1930.
- Bucknell's lone win was a 3-0 verdict at home in 2008. The two sides have only met once since then, a 1-0 Cornell win in Ithaca in 2019.
- All three goals came in the second half of the 2008 Bison win. Chris Hennings scored twice in eight minutes early in the second half – his sixth and seventh goals in five games to start the season -- and Ross Liberati added a third in the 68th minute. Tommy Caso made four saves in goal.
- The most recent clash in 2019 was a late-October midweek matchup in Ithaca, and Cornell prevailed 1-0 on a Brady Dickens goal in the 57th minute. Emmett Witmer made five saves for the Bison, but they were held to only two shots all night, both from Stefan Gollisz.Â
- Bucknell hosts Holy Cross in round two of Patriot League play on Saturday at 4 p.m.
- The Crusaders are 2-3-1 on the season heading into Monday night's home game with No. 5 Clemson. Holy Cross downed Lehigh 2-1 at home in its Patriot League opener on Saturday, scoring twice in the final 18 minutes to steal the three points.
