LEWISBURG, Pa.- The strong start for Bucknell men's soccer continued with a resounding 2-0 victory over the visiting Mount St. Mary's Mountaineers on Saturday at Emmitt Field at Holmes Stadium. The Bison (2-0) tallied a goal in each half and had 20 shots overall to keep the fellow US Route 15 school on the backend. The Mount (0-2-1) only had a few chances compared to the cornucopia of Bucknell opportunities.Â
Jack Lucas and Ben Sheffield provided the goals for the Bison while goalkeeper Freddie Lapworth played excellent defense to record his second consecutive clean sheet.Â
After both teams were denied by marvelous saves, Lucas put the Bison on the board in the 26th minute with a penalty kick. A yellow card on Mount's Markus Nilsen on a tackle in the box set up the opportunity. The sophomore lined up his shot and deposited it inside the left corner beyond the futile grasp of Mount's goalkeeper. His teammates erupted in jubilation.Â
"It was a good win against a team with size and talent," said Brandt. "We hadn't played in nine days, and had another nine day gap previously between our last preseason game and the opener at Robert Morris. So I thought it was a bit of a slow start for us today trying to find our game legs, but once we did, it was better and a good performance in the end."
Bucknell has several days to rest before heading to Fairfax, Virginia on Sept. 3 to play George Mason.Â

Goal number two arrived in the 66th minute. Bucknell earned a corner kick and Coach Dave Brandt dialed up a brilliant piece of tactical strategy. The short corner was played out to Lucas, who looped an arching cross into the mass of humanity. Sheffield headed the ball over the desperately stretching hands of the goalkeeper. The ball found net and the Bison had their insurance goal.ÂLucas calmly and coolly delivers the goal!

The Mount tried to rally but Bucknell kept the offensive pressure up and had its lines playing high on the pitch. The Mount goalkeeper did well to keep the deficit from growing higher.ÂSheffield's beautiful header slips over the keeper's hand and Bucknell has a decisive 2-0 advantage.
