CANOE BROOK LEADERBOARD
PETER BRADBEER FEATURE (OCT. 16, 2019)
SUMMIT, N.J. – Bucknell alum Peter Bradbeer '20 made quite a run on "Golf's Longest Day". The former Bison standout shot 66-69 for a 7-under-par total of 135 on Monday and found himself in a four-for-one playoff for a berth in the 124th U.S. Open Championship next week at Pinehurst Resort. Bradbeer made a bogey on the first playoff hole, however, and fell just short of his first U.S. Open berth.
The three-putt in the four-man playoff was just the second bogey of the entire day for Bradbeer, who picked up right where he left off after a record-setting performance in his local qualifier last month. Seventy-two players teed off early Monday morning at Canoe Brook Country Club, gunning for one of the site's four U.S. Open bids. The field included a handful of current and former PGA Tour members along with two of the top-five ranked amateurs in the world. One of those PGA Tour pros was Chris Gotterup, who won the Myrtle Beach Classic on May 12. Gotterup finished at 6-under, one shot out of the playoff.
Bradbeer held his own in the star-studded field, starting his day with a 4-under 66 on the Canoe Brook South Course, which was the best score on that track in the morning flight. He reached 4-under after a birdie at the par-4 12th, and later he shook off his lone bogey at No. 17 with a closing birdie at 18. Bradbeer then shot a bogey-free 69 on the par-72 North Course, with his clutch birdie at the par-5 18th getting him to 7-under on the day.
Ben James, the University of Virginia sophomore who was recently the runner-up at the NCAA Championship, joined PGA Tour member Max Greyserman at the top of the leaderboard at 11-under. Andy Svoboda, who played in the PGA Championship at Valhalla last month and has appeared in five U.S. Opens, finished solidly in third place at 9-under.
That left Bradbeer in a four-man playoff for the final spot, alongside three-time PGA Tour winner Jim Herman, two-time U.S. Open qualifier and former Penn State player Michael Miller, and PGA Tour pro Raul Pereda from Mexico. Bradbeer was eliminated on the first playoff hole (North Course No. 10), Pereda went out on the second playoff hole, and then Herman rolled in a 15-foot birdie putt at the par-5 12th to knock out Miller, who settled for first alternate status.
Bradbeer earned his way to Canoe Brook with a sensational, course-record 66 at his local qualifier at Union League Liberty Hill on May 6. His birdie at the par-5 16th hole got him to 6-under, and that was good for a one-shot victory over former Kansas State player Kyle Vance.
Bradbeer, who earned his first professional win at the Citrus Golf Trail Open in Florida in December 2022, earned All-Patriot League honors as a Bucknell sophomore with a T-6th finish at the Patriot League Championship. He had a low round of 66 at the 2018 Cornell Invitational, and his career scoring average of 74.82 is the sixth-best in program history.
After graduating from Bucknell, Bradbeer used his fifth year of college eligibility at Temple, and then he turned professional in September of 2021. He had five runner-up finishes and 11 top-10s on the Minor League Golf Tour before breaking through with his first victory.
Another Bucknell men's golf alum, Abbie Valentine '04, was also in the field at the Canoe Brook qualifier on Monday. He shot 73-72 for a 3-over 145.
