Softball Clinches Patriot League Tournament Bid for Second Straight Season
4/28/2024 2:34:00 PM | Softball
LEWISBURG, Pa.- The Bucknell Bison softball team (18-25, 9-9 Patriot League) used timely hitting and steady pitching to win 3-1 over the Holy Cross Crusaders (11-35, 1-14 Patriot League) to clinch its second-straight Patriot League Tournament bid for the first time since the 2018 & 2019 seasons. The Bison's win and Army's loss to Lehigh ensured Bucknell would not have to scoreboard watch next weekend. Bucknell will await the outcome of next weekend's Army-Colgate series to see if the Bison are the #3 or #4 seed.
A two-run first inning and Annabella Hawkins' first career home run provided enough offense for the Bison to pull ahead of the Crusaders. Madison Roukey earned her second win of the weekend by throwing a complete game.
Recap
Roukey received the start and the ace pitcher delivered the results. Roukey scattered seven hits, mostly of which were weakly hit and found holes, and did not yield a run until the final inning.
Bucknell's two runs in the first inning set the tone for the game. Haley Speicher singled up the middle and Hilling doubled down the left field line. Smith stretched her hot weekend to 8-for-8 with a single up the middle. The Holy Cross second baseman kept it out of the outfield but Speicher scored. Savannah Jones followed with a sacrifice bunt to score Hilling and give Bucknell a 2-0 lead.
The Bison added an insurance run in the sixth inning when Annabella Hawkins homered. The senior smashed the sphere over the 210 foot marker on the left-field wall. It was Hawkins' first career home run and the first bomb by Bucknell at Becker Field in 2024. The moment brought the sunshine crowd to its feet in celebration for the senior slugger.
The run proved helpful as the Crusaders, as befitting their moniker, fought to the bitter end. Two singled bookended a hard lineout to left field. Roukey then obtained a looking strikeout for the second out. A dying quail single fell in front of Sarah Zimmerman in center field to score the first run. Facing Holy Cross' most dangerous hitter, Anna Sneigocki, with runners on the corners, Roukey displayed no fear and obtained a fly out to win the game and the tournament bid.
Notes
Bucknell finishes the 2024 Patriot League campaign at 9-9, marking an improvement from last year's 8-10 feat. The Orange & Blue Crew will become the #3 seed if Army takes two out of three games against Colgate. If Colgate wins two out of three games, the Raiders will be the #3 seed. If either team sweeps the series, they will be 10-8 and the #3 seed, as they both sit at 7-8 entering the final weekend.
