Corson’s Record-Setting Three-Homer Day Lifts Baseball to 15-3 Win over Lafayette

LEWISBURG, Pa. – Senior Jacob Corson became the first player in Bucknell baseball history to hit three home runs in a game, highlighting another huge offensive day for the Bison bats in a 15-3 win over Lafayette on Saturday at Depew Field. Corson and Sean Keys both had three hits and five runs batted in, and Billy Kender also collected three hits as Bucknell scored double-digit runs for the third straight game.
The win was a big one in the context of Bucknell's postseason hopes. The Bison improved to 11-13 in Patriot League play, solidifying their fourth-place position over 8-12 Lafayette. The top four qualify for the Patriot League Tournament in May.
After waiting out a rain delay of one hour and fifteen minutes, Bucknell got right down to business scoring seven runs in the bottom of the first inning. The Bison added five more in the third and three in the fifth before ending the game after seven on the 10-run rule.
The Bison piled up 13 hits, with seven of them going for extra bases, and also drew nine walks from four Leopards pitchers. Corson wrote the headlines with 1,224 feet worth of home runs. Numerous Bison had gone deep twice in a game, but no player had ever hit three for a historic program that dates back to 1886.
Corson, who is now 9-for-15 with four homers and 11 RBIs in his last three games, showed just how locked in he is at the plate by clearing the fence to all three fields on Saturday. The lefty hitter went to the opposite field for a two-run shot in the first inning, tucking a ball just inside the left-field foul pole for a 3-0 lead. After Lafayette pulled within 7-3, Keys hit a towering grand slam in the third inning, and then Corson followed with a 427-foot blast off the batter's eye in straightaway center field. He then capped his record-setting day by pulling a Justin Breitenstein pitch 408 feet well over the wall in right.
This was the second straight day that Keys and Corson hit back-to-back homers on consecutive pitches. The duo pulled off the same feat in Friday's 12-3 win over the Leopards. Keys now has 13 homers on the season and Corson is up to 11, and this is only the third time in team history that two or more teammates have hit double-digit dingers.
Doug Shribman (21), Andrew Brouse (17), and Ben Yoder (11) all did it in 2010, and a year later Shribman (16) and Bob Donato (10) both hit at least 10.
Corson also became the third player in Patriot League history to hit three homers in a game. Coincidentally, the last to do it was Lafayette's A.J. Miller against Bucknell on Apr. 3, 2010. Army's Walker Gorham also hit three against Lehigh in a Patriot League Tournament game in 2005.
The single-game home run mark was not the only new record-book entry for Corson. In a moment of levity in the second inning, the Bucknell dugout erupted with cheers when Corson was drilled by a Luke Craytor pitch. It was Corson's 40th career plunking, moving him past Joe Ogren for the most HBPs in team history.
Bucknell sent 11 men to the plate and hit for the cycle in the seven-run first inning. In addition to the Corson homer, Chris Morabito hit a two-run triple, Kender had an RBI double, and Kender and Keys hit singles.
Michael Zarrillo's two-run homer to the opposite field brought Lafayette within 7-3 in the top of the third, but the Bison broke it open in the bottom half thanks to the power of Keys and Corson. Luke Nascimento was hit by a pitch to start the rally, Morabito hit a sharp single up the middle, and then Kender drew a four-pitch walk. Keys jumped on Craytor's first pitch, lofting a towering grand slam well over the wall in right. Corson then drilled the very next pitch out of the park to make it 12-3.
Corson's third of the day followed a Keys infield hit and extended the lead to 14-3 in the fifth. Later in the inning, senior Ben Sinins pinch-hit with two on, and he drove in Michael Trommer with an infield hit to close out the scoring.
Bucknell's offensive fireworks overshadowed another strong game on the mound and in the field. Freshman Jake Schultz (3-3) worked six innings, allowing three runs on seven hits while striking out three. Graeme Carroll fanned two in a 1-2-3 seventh inning to end the game.
Bucknell and Lafayette wrap up their three-game series on Sunday at 1 p.m. The Senior Day ceremonies that were postponed due to Saturday's rain, will precede the first pitch on Sunday.
