LEWISBURG, Pa.- Freshman thrower Justley Sharp had a career day at the Bucknell Team Challenge on Saturday setting school records in two events. The historic accomplishment earned the Bucknell women's track & field athlete her first-ever Bison of the Week and Patriot League Field Athlete of the Week awards. It is the seventh time the women's track & field program has won Bison of the Week in the 2023-24 athletic year. Sharp joins teammate Karen Hull as the second Bison to win Field Athlete of the Week this season. Â
"Incredible performance by Justley," said throwing coach Ryan Protzman. "From the moment shot put started, she looked relaxed and confident. She carried that energy throughout the day. To watch another great high school thrower come in and shatter her personal bests is a testament to the work she has put in this year."
Sharp shattered two long-standing records for both events. Her 165-10 fling in the discus throw won the event and broke Tria Tyler's record set in 1999. Sharp's mark was six feet longer than Tyler's accomplishment of 159-10. The freshman's event-winning shot put throw of 51-2 3/4 came on her final flight attempt and removed Sophia Nnadi's 2015 record of 49-10 1/2.Â
The two victories gave the Bison 20 points, were part of the team's 11 overall wins, and helped Bucknell romp to 252.5 points to easily win the scored meet. The Orange & Blue outscored second-place Binghamton by 142.5 points.Â
The freshman has been heavily decorated this season winning three Patriot League Rookie of the Week awards. The last Bison to achieve three Rookie of the Week laurels or higher was Kaitlin Salisbury in the 2016-17 seasons. The decorated sprinter won seven.Â
Sharp and the Bison will compete in the Bloomsburg Maroon & Gold Meet and the historic Penn Relays this weekend before hosting the Patriot League Outdoor Championships on May 3-4.Â
