LEWISBURG, Pa. – Jaz Zanelli made a career-high 18 saves, and the Bison rookies accounted for five goals in the Bucknell men's lacrosse team's 7-5 win over Le Moyne Friday night. It was a defensive battle at a rain-soaked Christy Mathewson-Memorial Stadium, as there were just five combined goals scored over the first 38 minutes of action.
A 3-0 run over the final seven minutes of the third quarter lifted Bucknell to a comfortable 6-2 lead, and Zanelli registered 11 of his 18 saves over the final two quarters to seal the win. Sean Berrigan, Peter Grandolfo and Connor Davis each scored twice for the Bison, and Hans Huber scored once. Grandolfo and Davis also added assists to tie for the team lead with three points.
Bucknell jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the first quarter thanks to back-to-back goals by Davis just 31 seconds apart and one by Berrigan at the 7:16 mark. The Bison were unable to score again until 6:31 remained in the third quarter, however, and Le Moyne scored once at the end of the first and once early in the second to cut the deficit to 3-2.
Le Moyne dominated the time of possession in the second quarter and early in the third, outshooting the Bison 19-15 over those two frames. The Dolphins also posted a big advantage in faceoffs for the game, winning 10 of 15 draws.
Bucknell led 6-3 entering the fourth after the third-quarter run, but the two teams went silent again through most of the fourth. The three-goal separation remained for 14 minutes before Grandolfo scored with 1:58 remaining to give Bucknell its largest lead of the night. Le Moyne managed two more goals in the final two minutes, but the Bison were able to run out the clock and secure the win.
Zanelli's 18 saves were four more than his previous career high, which he achieved three times as a freshman in 2023. Huber, Michael Meyer and Henry Boykin also added points with one assist each.
