EASTON, Pa. – The Bucknell women's tennis team pulled out a big 5-2 Patriot League road win over Lafayette Thursday afternoon behind a strong showing in singles. The win put an end to a five-dual losing skid for the Bison and comes at a crucial point in the schedule, as Patriot League Tournament seeds begin to fall into place before next weekend's championships.
Lafayette took two of three in doubles to jump out to a 1-0 advantage in the dual, but the Bison took the first three singles decisions to take the lead. With the Bison up 3-2, Whitney King sealed the victory with a three-set win at first singles over sophomore Alyssa Perdomo. King also joined Abby Platt in a win at first doubles.
King and Platt improved to 22-5 on the season with their decisive 6-1 doubles win over Olivia Boeckman and Ally Bauer, but the Leopards won 6-2 on court two and 6-0 on court three, making each singles match all the more important for the Bison.
Tori Allen got the Bison on the board with a 6-1, 6-2 win over sophomore Alexandra Waldman. Anna Lajos followed with a 7-5, 6-2 win on court two over Hanna Ganchi, and Platt defeated Carmen Merkel 6-3, 7-5 on court three to put Bucknell in front 3-1 in the dual. The Leopards responded with a win at fourth singles to cut the deficit to 3-2.
King put the dual away with a 3-6, 6-1, 6-3 win on court one. The junior improved to 17-9 overall in singles play with the win and 11-7 in dual singles. Mirra Manolov added one more point for Bucknell, defeating Bauer 6-1, 6-1 at sixth singles.
The Bison collected their first Patriot League win of the season and improved to 9-12 overall. Lafayette fell to 11-10 (1-4 PL).
Bucknell wraps up the regular season on Saturday when it visits Loyola in Baltimore, Md. The dual is scheduled to begin at noon.
