Baseball Wins Pitchers’ Duel over Mount St. Mary’s 3-2

The same two teams played a 16-14 slugfest in Emmitsburg on March 27. The Bison had to fend off an early deficit in that game and they did so again, although this one featured outstanding pitching and defense from both sides.
Freshman arms bookended the win for Bucknell. Pavone earned his second start and allowed two runs on four hits over four innings. His only blemish came in the fourth, after he retired the first two batters in the inning on three pitches. But Mount St. Mary's put two runners on with a base hit and a bunt single, and then freshman Evan Meier slashed a triple into the right-field corner for his first collegiate hit.
The junior Swenson and the senior Patel (1-0) worked two scoreless innings apiece, and then after the Bison took the lead in the bottom of the eighth, the freshman Adelmann struck out two in a dominant ninth inning to register his first career save.

The Bison struggled offensively for much of the day against five Mountaineer pitchers, but they took advantage of some opportunities given to them in the sixth and eighth innings. Cam King, the Mount's third pitcher of the day, struggled to find the strike zone in the sixth. He walked the first two batters he faced, then Michael Trommer loaded the bases with a sharp single. Grant Voytovich's third walk of the day forced in a run, and then Nic Adamo was hit by Max McCrary's pitch to bring home the tying run.
Voytovich made an outstanding running catch in the right-center alley to strand a runner at third for Patel in the seventh. Patel worked a 1-2-3 eighth on only nine pitches, and then Bucknell took the lead in its final at-bat.

Tyler Dunn led off the bottom of the eighth with a walk against Jackson Snyder (1-2). Adamo dropped down a nice bunt, and Snyder's errant throw allowed Dunn to get to third. Matt Alexander entered as a pinch-hitter, and on a 1-2 pitch he went the other way for a sac fly to deliver the go-ahead run.
Adelmann needed only 10 pitches to end it in the ninth. He struck out the first two hitters and then got pitch-hitter Nick Fleming on a lazy fly ball to right.
Bucknell was limited to four hits in the game, two each by Trommer and Billy Kender. The Bison did draw seven walks.
While the Bison pitchers conceded only six hits and two walks over nine innings, the defense behind them was also outstanding. Kender made several nice plays at second base and gunned down a runner at the plate on a double-steal attempt. Left-fielder Jacob Corson made a perfect throw to nail a runner trying to first to third on a base hit into the gap.
Mount St. Mary's shortstop Tyler Long also made two outstanding plays, one deep in the hole and one up the middle, to rob Adamo and Corson of hits.
Now 13-19 on the season, the Bison return to Patriot League play this weekend for a big three-game home series against Lehigh. The two teams will play a doubleheader on Saturday starting at noon, followed by a single game on Sunday at 1 p.m.
