About the EIWA Championships
• Bucknell is set to host the 120th Eastern Intercollegiate Wrestling Association Championships at Sojka Pavilion on Friday, March 8 and Saturday, March 9. It's Bucknell's third time hosting the EIWA Championships, having previously held them in Sojka Pavilion in 2017 and 2011.
• The field includes 17 teams, and this historic edition of the EIWA Championships will be the final time the Ivy League institutions will partake before departing to form their own conference in 2024-25. Among the 17 are three teams that were ranked in the final National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) Coaches Poll: No. 8 Cornell, No. 17 Lehigh and No. 25 Penn. Army West Point was also receiving votes in that poll.
• In 2023, Cornell won the EIWA title for a second year in a row and for the 27th time in its history. Last year's EIWA Championships were hosted by Penn at The Palestra.
• Only seven current EIWA members have captured the team title: Lehigh (38), Cornell (27), Navy (13), Penn (4), Princeton (3), Army West Point (1) and Harvard (1). The Mountain Hawks and the Big Red have combined to win each of the last 22 titles.
• The EIWA, founded in 1905, is the oldest and largest wrestling conference in the nation.
Bucknell's EIWA Championships History
• Bucknell joined the EIWA in 1999-2000 and has wrestled at the league's championships 20 times.
• The Bison have finished as high as third in the team standings. They tied Penn for that spot in 2009 and claimed sole possession of it in 2015 and 2016.
• Four Bison, Andy Rendos (165, 2010), Kevin LeValley (149, 2011), Joe Stolfi (285, 2014) and Zach Hartman (165, 2021), have captured EIWA championship titles. Hartman and LeValley both earned the EIWA Coaches' Trophy as the EIWA Championships' Outstanding Wrestler.
• In 2023, Dylan Chappell (149) became the 10th Bison to finish as a runner-up at the EIWA Championships. Stolfi (285, 2015 & 2016) and Hartman (165, 2019 & 2020) were both two-time runners-up.
• Bucknell placed a wrestler on the podium at all 10 weight classes at the 2021 EIWA Championships, which only featured 10 schools due to the Ivy League and Centennial Conference's cancelation of all winter sports. Bucknell's next-highest placewinner total was eight during the 2010 championships.
• Since the wrestling team was reinstated ahead of the 2006-07 campaign, 45 Bison have combined to place on the EIWA podium 84 times.
NCAA Qualifiers from the EIWA Championships
• The EIWA will have 53 automatic qualifiers for the 2024 NCAA Championships, ranking behind only the Big Ten (85) and Big 12 (57). The EIWA has eight more allotments than last year and 11 more than in 2022.
• With eight, the EIWA has the most automatic qualifiers in the country from the 285-pound weight class. The EIWA is second to the Big Ten in automatic qualifiers from the 184-pound weight class and tied with the Big 12 for second at 197 pounds.
• At the 2023 EIWA Championships, Dylan Chappell (149) and Dorian Crosby (285) earned automatic berths. Kurt Phipps (133) was one of 47 wrestlers to earn an at-large bid. All three Bison made their first appearances at the NCAA Championships.
• Since the Bucknell wrestling program was reinstated ahead of the 2006-07 season thanks in large part to a generous donation from Bill Graham '62, 23 different wrestlers have combined to earn 49 NCAA berths and five All-America certificates.
• Since the program was revived, five Bison have qualified for four NCAA Championships: David Marble (133, 2007-10), Andy Rendos (165, 2007-10), Joe Stolfi (285, 2013-16), current volunteer assistant coach Tyler Smith (141, 2015-18) and Zach Hartman (165, 2019-22).
