LEWISBURG, Pa. – The Bucknell baseball squad came out on the wrong end of a doubleheader sweep at the hands of Army West Point on Monday, as the five-time defending Patriot League champs piled up 30 runs in a pair of 7-inning verdicts at Depew Field.
After falling by scores of 9-1 and 21-5, the Bison are now 9-14 overall and 3-5 in the Patriot League, while Army improved to 12-12, 3-1.
The Bison, who started freshman pitchers in both games, had 13 hits in the nightcap after being held to four in game one. Jacob Corson led the way with three hits in the second contest, and Tyler Dunn and Michael Trommer both had three hits on the day.
William Parker was Bucknell's biggest nemesis. After going 2-for-3 with a pair of runs batted in in the opener, Parker exploded for four hits and a team-record-tying eight RBIs in the nightcap. Derek Berg added six hits – four in game two – and three RBIs on the day.
The Bison will now play their next nine games on the road on the heels of an eight-game homestand. They have a non-conference matchup at Mount St. Mary's on Tuesday before heading to Holy Cross for three games next weekend. Bucknell and Holy Cross just split a doubleheader at Depew Field on Sunday.
Game 1: Army West Point 9, Bucknell 1
Bucknell rookie Jack O'Malley, who was coming off an outstanding start against Navy last weekend, breezed through the first three innings with seven strikeouts. He punched out the side in the second, and then fanned the first two men in the third before Berg turned on a fastball and sent it 438 feet over the wall in left-center field.
O'Malley lost his command in the fourth inning, as a hit batsman, two walks, and a balk made it a 2-0 game. Berg singled home two runs and Chris Barr delivered another run to make it 5-0 and end O'Malley's afternoon.
Army added an unearned run in the fifth before the Bison got on the board in the bottom half of the inning. Matt Alexander led off the inning with a single and went to second when Sean Keys was hit by a pitch. With two outs, Alexander was thrown out at the plate trying to score on Dunn's base hit, but the umpire ruled obstruction on the Army third baseman, and the run was awarded.
The Black Knights tacked on three more runs in the top of the sixth, which was plenty for Andrew Berg in his first start of the season. With his brother making up the other half of the battery, Berg allowed only an unearned run on four hits over 6.1 innings. He struck out eight and walked three.
Dunn finished with two hits, and Alexander had a good day at the plate with a single, a walk, and a sac bunt.
Game 2: Army West Point 21, Bucknell 5
This time Army got the bats going early, as the first six hitters of the game reached base against rookie starter Jonathan Adelmann, and five of them scored. The big blow was Parker's grand slam, marking just the start of his eight-RBI game. Parker came to bat with the bases loaded in all five of his at-bats and later drove in a run with an infield single and three with a double into the left-field corner.
The Black Knights scored in every inning but the second, and they broke open an 11-4 game with seven runs in the top of the sixth and three more in the seventh, which invoked the 10-run rule in the final game of the series.
Bucknell scored its first run of the game off Steven Graver in the third, but the damage might have been more if not for two sharply hit balls that ricocheted off the pitcher. Keys and Dunn opened the inning with singles, and then Trommer hit a rocket off Graver's foot that caromed right back toward the plate, and the catcher Berg was able to record the out at first. Corson followed with an RBI single, and then Grant Voytovich sent another hard-hit ball up the middle that Graver redirected toward the second-baseman Barr, who turned it into a 1-4-3 double play.
Nic Adamo and Chris Morabito led off the fourth with base hits and Andrew Swenson was hit by a pitch to load the bases with no one out against reliever Bryce Brownlee. An error brought home two runs and still left men at second and third and no outs, but Brownlee was able to wiggle out of the jam with no further damage.
Pinch-hitter Mike Chiaravallo drove in Bucknell's final run with an RBI single in the seventh.
Corson finished 3-for-4 and Trommer and Morabito had two hits each to lead Bucknell's 13-hit attack.
Berg and Parker both had four hits and Barr added three for Army, which collected 17 hits and eight walks in the game.
Brownlee improved to 4-1 on the season by pitching the final four innings. He allowed four runs, three earned, on seven hits but struck out five and did not walk a batter.
