GOODYEAR, Ariz. – Freshman Alex Creamean shattered the Bucknell record with a sensational 8-under-par 64 on Monday at the Loyola Intercollegiate at Palm Valley Golf Club. Sophomore Andres Barraza was not far behind with a 67, which helped the Bison post a 7-under 281 team score in the second round of the 54-hole event.
Creamean and Barraza totaled 15 birdies and an eagle to finish a combined 13-under. Bucknell moved up four spots into a tie for 13th place in the team standings at 1-under 575 total.
Creamean's record-setting day ironically started with a bogey at the par-4 17th hole. That would be his only blemish of the day. He birdied holes 2, 5, 6, and 8, and then he eagled the par-5 ninth for a 6-under 30 on the course's front nine. Creamean birdied both par-5s on the back nine to get into school record range at 7-under, and then he added one more birdie at the par-4 15th for good measure. He finished the day with a par at the 185-yard par-3 16th hole to post 64.
The previous Bucknell record was 65, first set by Ben Pellicani at the 2005 Patriot League Championship at the Bucknell Golf Club. Chris Tanabe matched that mark at the Dartmouth Invitational in the fall of 2019.
Creamean's 8-under total was two clear of the Bucknell record in relation to par. Tanabe, Blake Wisdom, Will Bachman, and Andrew Cohen all turned in 6-under rounds.
Barraza, who birdied seven of his first 10 holes on the way to a 1-under 71 in Sunday's first round, added eight more birdies in round two on the way to his career-best 67, which is now tied for the 12th-best score in team history.
With Creamean and Barraza going low, Bucknell also tied its school record with a 7-under team score. The Bison have twice posted 276 at the par-70 BGC, but Monday's tally matched the record for low round in relation to par. Bucknell also fired a 7-under 281 on the way to a win at the 2018 Quechee Club Collegiate Challenge.
Also contributing to the record was Michael Rudnick, who made 13 pars and two birdies on the way to a 74, and James Key and James Robbins, who both shot 76. Also of note, indie Lyman Brackett made two eagles and a birdie on his way to a 1-under 71.
Scores were low across the field in round two, with 29 players shooting in the 60s. Arsit Areephun of Delaware backed up his opening-round 67 with a 65 to get to 12-under for the tournament. North Dakota State's Nate Adams and Loyola's Michael Crowley are both two back at 10-under.
Creamean and Barraza are both T-10th at 6-under 138.
North Dakota State has the team lead at 26-under 550 (275-275). Host Loyola is second at 554, and Northern Colorado (559), Utah Valley (560), and Seton Hall (562) round out the top five. Bucknell and Gonzaga are T-13th at 575.
The third and final round is slated for Tuesday morning. The Bison will play alongside Gonzaga, Air Force, and Eastern Michigan, starting on holes 13-15 at 9:45 a.m. Eastern (7:45 a.m. local).
