COLONIAL HEIGHTS, Va. – Nic Adamo drove in the go-ahead run in a three-run seventh-inning rally, leading the Bucknell baseball team to a 9-7 win over Massachusetts in the opener of a four-game series on Friday night at Shepherd Stadium. Jonathan Adelmann became the second Bison freshman in as many games to earn his first collegiate win on the mound, and Nick Mulvey worked a 1-2-3 ninth for his second save.
Now 2-2 on the season, Bucknell had to come from behind in this one as Carter Hanson gave the Minutemen the lead with a two-run homer in the top of the first inning. Grant Voytovich singled home Jacob Corson in the bottom half, but UMass added two more in the second to take a 4-1 lead.
Down 5-3 in the bottom of the sixth, the Bison scored three times to take their first lead of the game, with Sean Keys knocking in the go-ahead run with a single. The Minutemen tied it with a single run against Adelmann in the top of the seventh, but the rookie buckled down to escape further trouble. With men at first and third and still none out, Adelmann sandwiched two strikeouts around an infield pop to keep the game 6-6.
Billy Kender led off the bottom of the seventh with a triple, pinch-hitter Michael Trommer walked, and then Adamo came through with a base hit to bring home Kender. After Brady Karp walked to load the bases, Corson was hit by a pitch to bring in Trommer, and then the ninth run scored on a balk.
UMass pulled within 9-7 with a run in the eighth, but Mulvey was flawless in the ninth. He struck out the dangerous Hanson and got the final out on a ground ball to Keys at third. Mulvey also earned a save in last Sunday's win over Towson.
Freshman Jack O'Malley earned the win in relief in that game, and now Adelmann joins him in the win column. Two former Bison who are now graduate students at UMass – Renn Lints and Jacob Terwilliger – pitched for the Minutemen (0-1) in what was their season opener.
Bucknell and UMass are slated to play a doubleheader on Saturday, with game one starting at noon.
