ST. BONAVENTURE, N.Y. – Megan Krestinski tied her career high with four goals, but the Bucknell women's lacrosse team could not overcome a slow start on the road and fell 15-13 at St. Bonaventure on Wednesday afternoon. Allie Boyce added three goals and Taylor McClain handed out three assists for the Bison.
Megan Schillinger and Brooke Piper scored three goals each for the Bonnies, who improved to 1-1 on the season and avenged a 22-6 loss in Lewisburg a year ago. St. Bonaventure also received a big performance from goalie Ashley Herrick, who tallied 13 saves.
Bucknell Freshman Braeden Siverson scored her first two career goals to go along with a season-high eight draw controls, and Taylor Kopan chipped in two goals and an assist. First-year goalie Bella Crowley made her Bison debut in relief and finished with five saves.
The Bison (0-3) struggled out of the gates in the first quarter for the second straight game. They fell behind 7-0 at Villanova on Saturday before pulling within 10-9 in the fourth quarter. This time around St. Bonaventure scored on its first possession of the game and took a 6-2 lead on Tori Nascimento's goal with six seconds left in the first quarter.
Siverson's first collegiate goal came at the 11:36 mark of the second quarter, and Bucknell closed within 9-6 at the half as the two teams alternated goals throughout the period.
The Bonnies were seemingly in control when Schillinger's goal 90 seconds into the fourth quarter gave them a 14-8 lead, but the Bison fought their way back in it.
McLain fed Kopan for a goal, Boyce scored twice in succession, and then another McClain-to-Kopan strike made it a 4-0 run and cut the deficit to 14-12 with 5:20 still to play.
St. Bonaventure won the ensuing draw, and Kassi Hogan scored a big goal to halt the Bison run and make it 15-12. Krestinski's fourth of the day brought Bucknell within two again with 2:44 left, and Crowley's clutch save on Piper gave her team another possession with a minute to go. Bucknell went up a player after a green card with 53 seconds to go but lost possession, and the Bonnies were able to run out the clock.
St. Bonaventure finished with a 30-29 edge in shots, Bucknell led 17-14 in ground balls, and both teams committed 14 turnovers.
After playing their first three games of the season on the road, the Bison make their home debut on Saturday against Robert Morris at 1 p.m.
