LEWISBURG, Pa.- The Bucknell Bison women's basketball team (9-16, 6-8 Patriot League) battled throughout the game but came up short in overtime, falling 58-47 to the Holy Cross Crusaders (15-10, 9-5 Patriot League) on Wednesday night at Sojka Paviion. The Bison had a chance to win the game in regulation, but Blake Matthews' buzzer-beater hit the front of the rim. Holy Cross jumped out to a 7-0 run in overtime and used the momentum to take the win. The Orange & Blue held the purple-clad visitors without a basket for the final six minutes of regulation but could not capitalize offensively.Â
Ashley Sofilkanich tied a career-high in rebounds with 15, set a career-high in made free throws (10), and scored 14 points to notch her fourth double-double. Emma Theodorsson tallied 13 points to eclipse the career 500-point mark. Grace Sullivan continued her stretch of double-digit scoring efforts with ten points. Ashley O'Connor went 2-of-14 from the field but hit a crucial three-pointer to put Bucknell up 45-44 late in the fourth quarter. Isabella King hit a three-pointer to give the junior sharpshooter 500 points for her career.Â
Bronagh Power-Cassidy led the Crusaders' attack with 26 points on 7-of-17 shooting from the field and 8-of-10 from the foul line. No other Crusader hit double-digits.Â
Both teams struggled from the field. Bucknell went 17-of-64 (26.6%), while Holy Cross hit 20-of-66 (30.3%). The difference in the game resided at the three-point line. Bucknell went 2-of-18 (11.1%), and Holy Cross made 6-of-24 (25%). The narrow margin was enough to sustain the Crusaders' offense.Â
The game started slowly and never developed a frantic offensive pace. The contest was 6-4 Holy Cross at the first media timeout. Both defenses focused their efforts on the primary scorers. Holy Cross stretched its lead to 8-4 before King hit her three-pointer to draw within one point and hit the 500-point milestone. A Sullivan layup gave Bucknell the 9-8 advantage. A Crusader three-pointer granted Holy Cross the 11-9 lead after one quarter.Â
Bucknell blitzed to a 5-0 run to start the second period. Theodorsson scored all five points on a jump shot and a traditional three-point play. Holy Cross flipped the momentum with a 9-2 stretch. Bucknell responded with a 6-0 run powered by baskets from O'Connor, Sullivan, and Theodorsson. Holy Cross tied the game at 22-22 before Sofilkanich deposited two free throws. The Crusaders ended the half by scoring the final three points for the 25-24 lead.Â
The Bison broke out to a 6-2 mini-run in the third quarter. Sofilkanich tallied four of the six points. Holy Cross tied the game at 30-30 with a three-pointer. A Sullivan basket returned the lead to Bucknell before Power-Cassidy hit two free throws. Both teams went cold for two and a half minutes before Sofilkanich dropped in two free throws. The Crusaders concluded the quarter on a 4-0 run for the 36-34 lead.Â
The teams traded baskets to begin the fourth quarter. Theodorsson's jump shot put Bucknell up 40-38 before the Crusaders hit two three-pointers, the final one coming with 6:26 remaining. Coach Trevor Woodruff called timeout to regroup the troops. The maneuver worked as Holy Cross would not score a bucket for the remainder of regulation. Unfortunately, the Bison offense struggled and could not take advantage of its prodigious defense. Holy Cross keyed on Sofilkanich and Theodorsson, applying immediate double and triple teams. Sullivan converted one basket, and with 1:22 remaining, O'Connor connected on a beautiful three-pointer. Power-Cassidy drew a foul and hit 1-of-2 free throws to tie the game at 45-45. Bucknell had the ball for the final shot, but Matthews' three-pointer hit the rim.Â
Overtime quickly turned sour for Bucknell. Holy Cross galloped to a 7-0 run and continued to add on, running its streak to 11-0 before two Sofilkanich free throws broke the stretch. The Crusaders added a final basket before overtime ended as regulation did with a Matthews miss. Holy Cross shattered its four-game losing streak as the Bison fell 58-47.Â
