WEST POINT, N.Y.- The Bucknell Bison women's basketball team (10-16, 7-8 Patriot League) overcame a 15-point deficit to defeat the Army West Point Black Knights (11-14, 8-7 Patriot League) 65-63 on Saturday.
Bucknell used a potent paint attack (34 points) to overcome Army's red-hot three-point shooting. The Black Knights went 12-of-28 (42.9%) from beyond the arc. Grace Sullivan scored 17 points on 6-of-10 shooting and collected nine rebounds. Ashley Sofilkanich tallied ten points and grabbed four points.
It was a complete team effort by the Bison. Emma Theodorsson scored 11 points, all in the second half. Blake Matthews added nine points. Isabella King and Ashley O'Connor each scored seven points.
Army had three double-digit scorers, led by Reese Ericson's 18 points on 7-of-18 shooting. Fiona Hastick added 16 points, and Camryn Tade deposited ten points.
Bucknell shot 24-of-49 (49.0%) from the field and 14-of-18 (77.8%) from the foul line. Army hit 23-of-64 (35.9%).
"It was another good step for our group," said head coach Trevor Woodruff. I'm proud they found a way to win a game like this after the last two contests didn't go our way. Emma Theodorsson fought through some adversity to make big plays down the stretch."
The opening volleys belonged to Army. The Black Knights galloped out to an 11-4 lead, powered by ruthlessly efficient three-point shooting. The Bison cut the deficit to 11-9 with a 5-0 run. O'Connor nailed a trey, and Sofilkanich deposited a layup. Army recovered with a 10-4 run to close out the quarter.
The Black Knights continued their hot shooting in the second quarter, building a 31-16 lead. The Bison continued to scratch and claw, but Army answered every basket. The Bison drew within 37-27 on two Sullivan free throws. Army immediately tallied a three-pointer. Sullivan finished her impressive first half with a layup. The Bison trailed 40-29 at halftime, thanks to Army shooting 9-of-13 from three-point land.
Army went up 43-29 to start the third period before the Bison made their stampede. A 15-0 run by the Orange & Blue completely changed the game's tenor. It was a complete team effort. Theodorsson started the scoring with a layup, King drained a three-pointer, O'Connor made a clean jump shot, Theodorsson added a second layup, Matthews hit a pull-up jump shot, O'Connor converted a second jump shot, and Sofilkanich finished the run with a crisp layup. The final basket gave Bucknell its lead of the game, 44-43. Army did not collapse and ended the quarter on a 6-0 run.
The Bison counterattacked with a 7-2 run to tie the game at 51-51. The Black Knights tried to pull away with a 5-0 run. Bucknell refused to allow such a situation, using a 7-2 stretch to tie the contest. Theodorsson hit a three-pointer along with King & Sofilkanich's baskets. The Bison took the lead for good when Sofilkanich hit the and one on her shot.
The Orange & Blue added three more free throws for the 62-58 lead. Army did not quit. An Ericson jump shot cut the deficit to 62-60. Theodorsson was fouled and hit both free throws to restore the four-point lead. Army refused to go quietly and drained a three-pointer with nine seconds left. This time, Theodorsson only hit 1-of-2 free throws. The stage was set for a dramatic finish. Army drove into the paint and decided to pass up the tying shot for a three-pointer, but the cadet dropped the ball, and Bucknell had the 65-53 comeback win.
