LEWISBURG, Pa. - Alexa Brodie hit a 3-pointer from the left corner and completed a four-point play with 0.1 seconds left on the clock to lift the Colgate women's basketball team to a 59-55 victory over Bucknell Saturday evening at Sojka Pavilion. The heartbreaking loss ended a four-game winning streak for the Bison, who fell to 9-15, 6-7 PL. The Raiders captured their second straight win to improve to 13-11, 6-7 PL.Â
An Ashley Sofilkanich offensive rebound and put-back with 31.0 seconds left staked Bucknell to a late lead, but Colgate evened the score at 55-all on its next possession. After a timeout to advance the ball with 6.7 seconds left, the Bison turned the ball over on the inbounds pass. The Raiders called a timeout and had the ball on their half of the court with 3.8 seconds remaining.Â
Blake Matthews knocked the ensuing inbounds pass away and out of bounds across the court with 1.0 showing on the clock. Colgate called timeout and set up their final play, which ended with Brodie's 3-pointer.Â
Emma Theodorsson (23 points), Sofilkanich (17), and Grace Sullivan (13) combined to score 53 of Bucknell's 55 points.Â
Sophia Diehl led Colgate with 18 points and a game-high 13 rebounds, while Taylor Golembiewski added 13 and Brodie 10.Â
Colgate shot 8-of-16 from the three-point stripe despite only averaging 3.6 makes entering the game.Â
The first quarter was a defensive slugfest with both teams probing and searching for a weakness. Bucknell had an early 4-2 advantage when Matthews hit a jumper. That would be the last Bison point by a player not named Sofilkanich, Sullivan, or Theodorsson. Colgate used a 5-0 run to seize the lead. Theodorsson led her own 4-0 counterattack. Once again, Colgate utilized a 5-0 run to grab the lead. The quarter ended with the Raiders up 12-8.Â
The Raiders remained ahead in the second period, using an 8-2 run to establish a double-digit lead. As before, Theodorsson scored all the points in a small 4-0 run. Colgate's Diehl wiped away 75% of Theo's efforts with a three-pointer. Theodorsson did not suffer the fate gladly and converted two free throws. Sofilkanich added a layup. A second Diehl three-pointer with 56 seconds left gave the Raiders a 26-18 halftime lead.Â
The second half saw a reversal of the Bison's fortunes. Bucknell began clawing its way back into the game. With the score at 28-20 Colgate, Bucknell went on a 7-0 run powered by three Sullivan points, a Theodorsson basket, and two Sofilkanich free throws. Colgate's Golembiewski hit a jump shot, and Sullivan responded in kind. After the media timeout, Sofilkanich used a fast break layup for the first Bison lead since the first quarter. Colgate hit back with an 8-2 run. Theodorsson hit Bucknell's one three-pointer to carve the deficit to 38-36. The Orange & Blue would get no closer, with Colgate holding a 44-40 lead as the quarter expired.
The fourth quarter lacked scoring for the first five minutes, as the teams combined for five points. Bucknell hit two free throws, and Colgate had three points on a basket and free throw. The Bison made a 7-2 run to tie the game. Colgate retook the lead on two Golembiewski free throws before Sullivan cashed in a bucket to tie the contest. Theodorsson seized the lead on the next possession. The Bison could not extend the advantage on their next two chances. That opened the door for Colgate to tie the game. Sofilkanich collected a Theodorsson miss and inserted the ball into the hoop for the 55-53 lead. Colgate moved the ball well on their possession and tied the game with six seconds left. Bucknell called a timeout and advanced the ball. Ashley O'Connor's pass was intercepted, and Colgate used a timeout. Matthews deflected the first pass, but Colgate retained possession. The Raiders drew up a beautiful play, and Brodie drained the corner three-pointer. O'Connor fouled Brodie on the play. The free throw was superfluous, but Brodie did not miss. Colgate had won, 59-55.Â
