Women's Water Polo Splits Final Games of Bucknell Invitational

LEWISBURG, Pa. - The Bucknell University women's water polo team split contests Sunday on the final day of the Bucknell Invitational. The Bison earned its first home win of the season with a 9-7 victory over Mercyhurst in the morning opener. Despite a tough-fought battle, the Bison ultimately fell to Villanova 10-8 in the nightcap.

Game One Bucknell 9, Mercyhurst 7

The Bison and Lakers traded off goals throughout the first quarter, leaving it tied up at 3-3. Gwen Kallmeyer, a Mill Valley, Calif. sophomore, put the Bison on the board first when she drained a shot in the back of the net. Less than two minutes later, Bella Schraa, a sophomore from Greenwich, Conn., received a pass from the outside and successfully scored a second point for Bucknell.Â

The Bison held the Lakers scoreless in the second quarter. Kallmeyer and Isabelle Monaghan a senior from Lawrenceville, N.J., both tallied second goals for Bucknell to show the score 5-3 at halftime.Â

Bucknell kicked off the second half of play when Schraa scored the first goal at the 7:40 mark extending the Bisons lead by three. Sophomore attacker Bri Allstun and junior utility Grace Brzyski scored two for Mercyhurst in an effort to close the gap.Â

The Bison showed no sign of slowing down when it earned its final 3-1 run against the Lakers, with goals from freshman attacker Campbell Collins, freshman center Caitlin Stott, and Monaghan, who earned herself a hat trick.

Villanova started the game with strong momentum, swiftly outpacing Bucknell in the first half with a 5-4 run to secure an early lead. The Wildcats saw goals from utility Amelia Baca a junior from Eaglewood, Fla., and Ella Mattocks a sophomore center defender from Shutesbury, Mass. to kick off its run.Â

Meanwhile, for Bucknell, Izzy Lippolis, a junior from Greenwich, Conn., netted a goal, marking Bucknell's entry onto the scoreboard. Schraa tallied back-to-back goals, followed by Monaghan in an attempt to close the gap to just one.Â

In the second half, Bucknell surged forward with momentum as Collins scored a goal with 4:50 remaining, leveling the game at 6-6. Despite Bucknell's efforts to take the lead, Villanova countered by scoring four additional goals, ultimately seizing control and securing the lead to conclude the game.
