LAWRENCEVILLE, N.J. – A sweep in doubles and five straight-set singles victories helped the Bucknell men's tennis team roll to a 6-1 win at Rider on Saturday afternoon. In a match played outdoors on an unseasonably warm mid-February day in New Jersey, the Bison improved to 3-1 on the young season.
Amar Tahirovic, Adam Stavrakas, Oscar Bain Moreno de Vegas, Liam Kilmer, and Tim Zelikovsky were all two-time winners in both singles and doubles.
Bucknell kicked off the day with a clean sweep in doubles to take the point for the fourth straight dual match to start the season. Tahirovic and Brendan McDonald were 6-3 winners at No. 1, and Bain and Stavrakas won 6-2 at No. 2. Zelikovsky and Kilmer prevailed in a tiebreaker on Court 3 to make it a 3-for-3 day and improve Bucknell's team doubles record to 9-2 in duals and 42-20 overall.
Stavrakas at No. 2 and Kilmer at No. 5 dominated their singles matches. Stavrakas won the final 10 games in a 6-2, 6-0 win over Roger Pelaez Martinez, and Kilmer won the first eight in a 6-0, 6-2 win over Giacomo Ghitti.
Tahirovic improved to 12-2 on the season with a 6-3, 6-4 win over Dhruv Tangri at the top of the lineup. Bain (13-4) and Zelikovsky (13-1) both won their team-leading 13th singles matches with straight-set wins at No. 2 and No. 6.
Rider's lone point of the day came at No. 4 singles, where Stavros Hadjivarnava outlasted McDonald 10-8 in a third-set super tiebreaker.
Bucknell returns to action next Sunday with a road test against a good Delaware team that is 2-0 with wins over Penn State and William & Mary.
