LEWISBURG, Pa. - Ashley O'Connor hit two 3-pointers in the final 20 seconds of the fourth quarter to help the Bucknell women's basketball team overcome a late five-point deficit and force overtime, but the Bison were outscored 7-2 in the extra stanza to fall to Hofstra Saturday afternoon at Sojka Pavilion. O'Connor finished with a season-high 12 points off the bench.
The first half featured hot shooting from both teams with Bucknell (5-6) connecting on 17 of 28 field goals and the Pride making 16 of 31. The Bison were 7 of 15 from 3-point range in the first 20 minutes, led by 4 of 4 shooting from Isabella King.
Bucknell led by as many as 13 points in the first half. Hofstra ended the first half on a 9-2 run and drew within two points late in the third quarter.Â
Ashley Sofilkanich led the Bison with 20 points before fouling out in the fourth quarter. King (16 points) and Reese Zemitis (15 points) also tallied double figures.
Emma Von Essen led Hofstra (4-6) with 20 points, while Chloe Sterling tallied 19 points, 10 rebounds and five assists.Â
The first quarter was a barn burner with both teams scoring 20+ points. Hofstra forged ahead 22-21 on Sterling's three-pointer as time expired. Sofilkanich and Zemitis each tallied eight points in the opening stanza.Â
The Bison built a 13-point lead (43-30) in the second quarter when King nailed her fourth three-pointer of the game - a season-high for the senior sharpshooter. The lead seemed comfortable before the Pride went on their aforementioned 9-2 rally to cut the deficit to 45-39 entering halftime.Â
Bucknell regained a double-digit lead (51-41) in the third quarter but Hofstra refused to quit ending the period on an 8-2 run. The Pride drew within 51-49 but Sofilkanich replied with two free throws.Â
Tuana Coskun's only basket gave Bucknell a 61-54 lead with 7:16 remaining but the advantage disappeared when Hofstra went on an 10-2 run climaxed by a Sterling free throw as part of a traditional three-point play. The Pride extended the stretch to 14-2 with four additional free throws. O'Connor responded with the first of her clutch three-pointers. Sterling went 1-of-2 from the line and O'Connor's second triple sent the contest to overtime.Â
Both teams started frigid in overtime. Elana Weisman went 2-of-4 from the free throw line for Bucknell's only extra period points. Hofstra was scoreless until Ramatoulaye Keita scored a layup with 1:22 left. Janaia Fargo drained a corner three off a fast break. King's three-pointer caught nothing but air and Von Essen converted both free throws to essentially salt the game away. Zemitis's layup missed and Hofstra prevailed 76-71.Â
