ANNAPOLIS, Md.- The Bucknell Bison finished fifth out of 12 teams at the 46th Navy Classic with 88.5 points on Saturday. The Orange & Blue placed eight wrestlers on the podium, headlined by Kurt Phipps's (133) second-place finish. Phipps made an exciting run to the final round, but he lost in a 3-2 decision to Indiana's Angelo Rini.
Dylan Chappell finished as the second-highest Bison with a third-place finish in the 141-weight class. Cade Wirnsberger tied his performance in the 157-pound division. Myles Takats (174) grabbed fourth, Aiden Davis (149) finished fifth, and three Bucknell wrestlers, Dillon Bechtold (197), Vinnie D'Alessandro (133), and Nolan Springer (285) unlocked sixth place.
Phipps dominated his Round of 16 matchup winning by technical fall over Marcus Wright (The Citadel). To reach the finals, he won two decisions by 11-4 and 3-0 over Chase DeBlaere (Oregon State) and Logan Frazier (Indiana). He fought Angelo Rini to a tough finish but couldn't overcome Rini's three takedown points.
Chappell blitzed to a hot start with two straight technical falls but was stopped cold in the semifinals by Nebraska's Brock Hardy in a 2-0 decision. He recovered to win bronze with a 4-2 decision over Oregon State's Nash Singleton.
Wirnsberger followed Chappell's path by winning his first two bouts and then losing to a Cornhusker in the semifinals. He recorded two decisions to face Antrell Taylor who defeated the Bison via a technical fall. He rallied to sink Navy's Jonathon Ley 10-9. He built an early 6-1 lead and held strong to win the match.
Aiden Davis lost his first match 3-2 and fell to the consolation rounds. He was not dismayed and pulled off four straight wins to take home fifth place. His streak started with a major decision, followed by a decision, and recorded a technical fall. He won fifth on a fall over Kent State's Nathan Roth.
Bechtold received a bye to the 197-pound quarterfinals where he lost 9-3 to Navy's Payton Thomas. The Bison wrestler rallied and won three straight bouts ascending to the podium with sixth place. He earned a technical fall and a major decision before losing 7-3 in the 5th-place bout.
D'Alessandro introduced himself to collegiate wrestling by winning sixth place. His first match was a technical fall over Oregon State's Richard Bell. He lost to eventual champion Rini but recovered to beat another Beaver by decision. He dropped the 5th-place duel to a third OSU wrestler by a major decision.
Springer collected the final sixth-place finish for the Bison. He dropped the first match by technical fall and then rattled off three wins, two by technical fall, before dropping a 4-0 decision to William Jarrell of American in the 5th-place battle.
Nebraska repeated as team champion with 150 points. Oregon State finished second with 130.5, and host Navy grabbed third with 103.
Bucknell will rest and enjoy Thanksgiving before resuming action with its first home match on Dec. 7 against Wisconsin.
