LEWISBURG, Pa.- The Bucknell Bison field hockey team (8-8, 4-2 Patriot League) missed a chance for a share of the regular season title and the American Eagles (11-7, 6-0 Patriot League) clinched the outright regular season title and home field advantage for the Patriot League Tournament by defeating the Orange & Blue, 2-0 on Saturday afternoon.
American scored twice in the second half after a tight, defensive 30 minutes. The Bison outshot the Eagles 11-5 and drew one more penalty corner (6-5) but could not convert any chances into goals.
The entire first half was a defensive masterclass by both teams. The Bison had the only shot in the first quarter - a Lily Neilson attempt that went wide right. The second quarter slightly heated up with four combined shots and five penalty corners but the game remained scoreless.
The Eagles's first goal arrived with 25 seconds remaining in the third quarter. The score occurred after Bucknell misfired on several penalty corners. American pressed the attack and forced a penalty corner. Sophie Willemse passed the ball to Agustina Roffo who shot to the right side of the goal past Sarah Althouse.
The second goal came after Bucknell pulled Althouse with five minutes remaining in the final period. Despite the extra attacker, American kept the Bison on their heels and earned the only penalty corner of the fourth stanza. Emilia Winkler received the pass from Tayla-Jade Weiss and tallied the second goal.
The Patriot League Tournament starts on Thursday at American University with both semifinal games. The championship game will be on Saturday also at American. The four teams: American, Boston, Bucknell, and Lafayette have clinched spots. The Bison's opponent and time slot are to be determined.
