Men’s Soccer Erases Pair of Deficits in 2-2 Draw with Lehigh, Now Tied for First in Patriot League

LEWISBURG, Pa. – Ben Sheffield and Drew Roskos both scored equalizing goals off corner kicks, helping the Bucknell men's soccer team remain at the top of the Patriot League table after a 2-2 draw with Lehigh in front of a large crowd at Emmitt Field on Saturday night.
The Bison are now 4-4-2 overall and 2-0-2 in the Patriot League, and with eight points they are tied with Colgate for the top spot in the standings. Lehigh (4-6-2, 2-1-1 PL) remains just one point back and is now tied for third place with American and Navy.
This one was an entertaining, end-to-end affair with drama all the way to the final whistle. Lehigh nearly scored in the opening minute of the match when Yusef Gueye headed a rebound over the bar, and then the Bison came within inches of taking an early lead in the sixth minute but Winston Oziri rattled the woodwork for the second time in as many games.
Lehigh was awarded a penalty kick after a foul in the box in the 35th minute, and Perry Kingson converted even though Freddie Lapworth reached back and got his left hand on the shot.
Bucknell tied it seven minutes later after some hard work from left wingback Jack Lucas. Waldemar Kattrup played a long ball over the top that a Lehigh defender seemed willing to see out over the end line, but Lucas never gave up on the play and earned the Bison a corner kick. Gianluca Marroni's delivery was headed home by Sheffield, giving the freshman his first career point with the assist and Sheffield his second goal of the season.
Bucknell was full of chances in the second half and nearly took the lead five minutes in, but Blake Koski made a close-range save with his left foot to deny Lucas.
The game changed with a strange play in the 53rd minute. A Bison slide tackle near the sideline went out of play but ricocheted off the advertising panels and back onto the pitch, and while that ball was still on the field Lehigh took a quick throw with a different ball about 10 yards farther up the sideline. That sprung a break, and Aiden Gonzalez slipped a pass over to Beckett Wenger for the finish from inside the six to give the Mountain Hawks a 2-1 lead.
Roskos put a header off the post in the 57th minute, but the freshman got his second goal of the season about seven minutes later. Again off a corner kick, David Krumov's delivery was headed down toward the back post by Sheffield, and Roskos was there for the finish, which he punctuated with a nice back handspring in celebration.
The Bison fought hard for the go-ahead goal, but Koski made two big saves on Cade McGrath and Sheffield. On Sheffield's header with three minutes to play, Koski went up high for the catch, and as his momentum took him back into the goal he got his foot caught in the side netting and had to throw the ball out before it crossed the line.
Bucknell finished with a 14-8 shot advantage and a 7-5 edge in corner kicks.
"I thought we were a bit unlucky to be down twice in the game, but the guys fought hard to get back in it," said head coach Dave Brandt. "It's not the three points that we wanted, but every point is valuable in the Patriot League, so we'll take it and move on."
Bucknell steps away from league play for a Tuesday night match at Binghamton before traveling to Boston University on Saturday afternoon.

Not sure what was better the goal or the back handspring, but regardless Drew Roskos makes it 2-2! #rayBucknell
