Field Hockey Shut Out 2-0 by Lafayette
10/4/2024 8:27:00 PM | Field Hockey
LEWISBURG, Pa.- In front of a Gray Out crowd, Bucknell field hockey (4-6, 2-1 Patriot League) fell from the ranks of the league's undefeated teams with a 2-0 loss to the Lafayette Leopards (6-4, 2-1 Patriot League) Friday night. The Bison had opportunities but could not generate any goals for only the second time this year. Lafayette tallied two goals off penalty corners to throw a wrinkle into the Patriot League race.Â
The first quarter started quietly as neither team advanced much of an offensive threat. Both teams totaled one side but the attempts were not dangerous. Bucknell recorded the one penalty corner during the period.Â
Action started heating up in the next quarter with both squads obtaining two shots. However, defensive play remained supreme as two of the Patriot League's best refused to allow any easy chances.Â
Lafayette broke through for the game's first goal in the third stanza. A Leopards penalty corner quickly turned into chaos in front of the Bucknell goal. Sarah Althouse ventured out to stop a shot but the sphere deflected to Lafayette's Kate Gibb who attacked the open net. She was swarmed by her jubilant teammates for giving the Easton team the 1-0 lead at the 43rd minute.Â
The Leopards added an insurance goal in the final quarter. At the 52th minute, Lafayette earned another penalty corner. Once again, frantic play ensured after the initial shot was denied. Laila Pasic sent a pass past Althouse to Alex Darrah who sat herself in front of the cage. Darrah shot and provided Lafayette with the 2-0 advantage.Â
Bucknell pulled Althouse under the five-minute mark and started attacking offensively. The Bison had several penalty corners but the insertions were mishandled and the Lafayette defense prevented any clean looks. Katie Lintz sent in a perfect pass but Isabella Pavlides's stick just missed a clean connection. Time ran out and Bucknell lost its first conference game.Â
The Bison will look to rebound Sunday against I-80 neighbor Lock Haven. Bucknell will celebrate Senior Day and honor the careers of eight amazing student-athletes.Â
