BOSTON, Mass. – A good battle between the top two teams in the Patriot League standings went in favor of the home team, as Boston University edged Bucknell 1-0 on Sunday at Nickerson Field. The Bison (5-2 PL) and Terriers (4-0-3 PL) are now tied for the league lead on 15 points with two games remaining in the regular season.
Freshman Juliana Osterman came off the bench to score the game's only goal with only 5:51 left in the first half. Kaiya Stewart slipped a pass between two backs, and Osterman took a touch and finished past a diving Jess Benattar.
Benattar, who was coming off three straight 1-0 shutout wins, had just made a terrific 1v1 save on Morgan Fagan, and she finished with five stops on the day.
Both teams had good scoring opportunities leading up to the goal. In addition to the Fagan chance in the center of the area, Giulianna Gianino struck the crossbar on a free kick just outside the box. Terriers keeper Bridget Carr denied Bucknell scoring leader Teresa Deda in the 28th minute, tipping her shot into the post, and then the rebound spun untouched across the face of goal.
Deda had another good look from outside the box in the 53rd minute, but Carr made another good save to tip it out for a corner kick.
"I thought the play was fairly even up until the goal, and to Boston's credit they scored a great goal and captured some of the momentum," said head coach Kelly Cook. "We knew the long road trip in a two-game week was going to be a challenge and we were certainly not at our best today. Full credit to Boston, they played a great game today, and now the question is how will we respond."
The Bison are back on the road next Saturday to face Lafayette, and then they will finish the regular season at home against Lehigh on Oct. 30.
