LEWISBURG, Pa.- The Bucknell Bison volleyball team (15-1, 7-0 Patriot) extended its nation-longest winning streak to 15 games with a decisive sweep (25-17, 25-16, and 25-12) over the Loyola (Md.) Greyhounds (6-11, 4-4 Patriot) on Saturday afternoon. The Bison attack was too much for the Greyhounds's defense, as Bucknell hit a blistering .320. Loyola hit a paltry .035 in response.
Bucknell, once again, tied South Dakota State for the nation's longest winning streak. Pitt, sitting at 15-0 entering today, lost to No. 15 SMU in five sets several minutes after Bucknell's match concluded. South Dakota State plays North Dakota tonight at 7 p.m.
The Bison's 7-0 record in Patriot League play is its best start in program history for conference competition breaking the 6-0 mark set by the 1995 team.
After a first set which featured seven ties and one lead change, there were only two ties and one lead change for the remainder of the contest, as the Orange & Blue exercised control over the match.
Bucknell's victory was a massive group effort. Riley Tucker was the headliner with ten kills on an excellent .500 hitting percentage while adding four blocks. Cameron Lloyd tied Tucker in kills and supplied eight digs. Sidney Shaffer played big at the middle with six block assists and hit .462. Caleigh O'Connell gathered 37 assists on 85 attempts.
Jordan Hardy, recently profiled in a Tales from the Herd piece, collected 18 digs to move across the 1,800-threshold. Hardy now had 1,801 career digs and sits 22 away from fourth place in the Patriot League.
The first set was the match's most competitive scene. Loyola matched the Bison point for point throughout the early portion. With the score 12-11 in favor of the Orange & Blue, Bucknell made a 5-0 run to effectively seal the set. Tijana Kostic collected three of her eight kills during the stretch. Loyola cut the deficit to 20-16 before Bucknell unleashed a 5-1 run to win the set with Bella Rodriguez's ace providing the winning point.
Bucknell never trailed in the second stanza. The Bison trucked to a 12-5 lead. Loyola used a small 3-0 run to cut within four. A 4-0 Bucknell run followed highlighted by two key blocks by O'Connell and Shaffer. The two teams traded points which proved to Bucknell's advantage. A Loyola attack error ended the set in the Orange & Blue's favor.
Loyola started the final set with leads of 1-0 and 2-1 before the Bison turned on the afterburners. Bucknell roared to a 16-7 margin and were preparing to grab the brooms from the closet. At 17-9, the Bison added a 7-1 run with three service aces to stamp out any remaining resistance. A final attack error handed the set and match to Bucknell.
Bucknell heads to Colgate tomorrow for a 1 p.m. showdown with the three-time defending Patriot League champions. Colgate sits at 6-1 in the conference. The Bison snapped the Raiders's 33-game home winning streak last season.
